Technical Director
Technical Director – AI-Enabled Products & Services
About the Role
IF is seek a Technical Director to steer our growing AI-enabled products and services practice. In this leadership role, you’ll shape technical strategy and delivery, guide permanent and freelance technical practitioners, and deliver trustworthy AI solutions for our clients. You’ll also play a pivotal role in winning new business, strengthening client relations, and contributing to new business development and marketing initiatives.
Project Delivery
- Provide strategic technical guidance across multiple client projects, balancing opportunities, challenges, and trade-offs
- Ensure technical direction aligns with client objectives and project outcomes
- Support engineers and practitioners, embedding technical clarity in multi-disciplinary teams
- Lead prototyping, proofs of concept, and pilot projects
- Ensure high-quality deliverables that meet agreed technical standards
Business Development
- Assess and shape incoming business inquiries, aligning IF’s technical capabilities with client needs
- Expand IF's industry reach by cultivating relationships and positioning our AI expertise
- Identify opportunities to extending existing engagements or launching new streams of work
- Contribute to thought leadership through:
- Writing technical blogs
- Developing AI-specific frameworks based on insights
- Currating tools for practitioners
The Company
- Demonstrate IF’s tech strategy and ensure it drives client impact
- Hire and grow permanent and freelance engineers and technologists
- Develop IF’s technical practice by creating guidance, processes, and tools
- Coach and mentor teams, fostering high performance and progression

About You
Technical & Leadership Experience
- Strong engineering background with hands-on experience designing and launching digital products and services
- Broad experience in AI solutions—theoretical and applied—including LLMs, transformers, and generative AI
- Proven track record of leading technical teams in multi-disciplinary roles
- Ability to shape technical strategy, define architectures, and manage trade-offs
- Experience in consulting with client-facing leadership capability
Qualities & Attributes
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to clarify complex technical challenges
- Strong commercial sense—aligning tech with strategy and budget
- Winning record in business development for consultancies
- Thought leadership interest—preferred experience with conference talks, open-source contributions, or community engagement
- Low-ego, collaborative approach with a culture-progressive attitude
- Exceptional communication—clear writing, storytelling, and presentation skills
- Coaching leadership: drives performance by building feedback cultures and enabling team autonomy
Your Location
IF bases its London studio in Shoreditch, with a remote-first culture and flexible expectations. Teams meet Wednesdays at HQ but otherwise work autonomously,—with occasional direct client travel. Flexibility is prioritised to ensure deep work conditions.

The Hiring Process

- Take-home brief – To evaluate how you align with IF workstyle practices.
- 60-minute walkthrough discussion – Review your brief, work habits, motivations, and reasons for joining IF.
AI note-taking support is used to assist interviews.
