The Role

As a Technical Director – Consulting within our growing Commercial Advisory business, you will play a pivotal role in building and leading a new Strategy & Transformation – Energy Transition capability. This is a senior market-facing leadership position for an experienced consulting professional who combines deep sector expertise with strong commercial acumen, transformational delivery capability and strategic client leadership.

You will work with executive-level stakeholders across the energy, utilities, infrastructure and public sectors, helping organisations respond to the strategic, commercial, regulatory and operational challenges of the energy transition. You will shape and win complex consulting engagements, provide visible market leadership and help establish a distinctive advisory offering that supports clients through decarbonisation, infrastructure investment, energy system transformation and organisational change.

This role combines senior client advisory responsibilities with business leadership, market development, capability growth and people leadership. It offers a unique opportunity to influence the future direction of GHD’s energy consulting business while delivering meaningful outcomes for clients and communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide senior leadership for the Strategy & Transformation – Energy Transition capability, helping define market priorities, propositions and growth opportunities.
  • Originate, shape and win strategic consulting engagements across energy transition strategy, commercial advisory, energy policy, system planning, infrastructure development and decarbonisation programmes.
  • Lead complex advisory and transformation engagements from opportunity identification through to successful delivery, ensuring excellence in quality, commercial performance and client outcomes.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior client stakeholders including executives, regulators, government bodies, investors, major infrastructure owners and utility organisations.
  • Provide strategic oversight across programmes involving operating model design, investment planning, implementation roadmaps, delivery governance, risk management, compliance and benefits realisation.
  • Build and strengthen strategic client relationships, supporting account growth, pipeline development, major pursuits and long-term client partnerships.
  • Bring together multidisciplinary teams across advisory, engineering, environment, digital and project delivery disciplines to develop integrated and commercially effective solutions.
  • Lead the preparation of high-quality client deliverables including business cases, transformation strategies, implementation programmes, investment plans and executive-level recommendations.
  • Represent GHD in the market through industry events, thought leadership, strategic partnerships, client forums and business development activities.
  • Mentor, coach and develop consultants and advisory leaders, contributing to capability development, recruitment, knowledge sharing and a high-performing team culture.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Typically 12+ years of relevant consulting, advisory or senior industry experience within energy, utilities, infrastructure, sustainability, policy, commercial strategy or business transformation.
  • Strong credibility operating at executive and board level, with the ability to engage, influence and challenge senior decision-makers across complex stakeholder environments.
  • Proven track record of originating, shaping, winning and delivering major consulting engagements or transformation programmes within energy, infrastructure or regulated sectors.
  • Deep understanding of the commercial, regulatory, policy and operational forces driving the UK energy transition, including decarbonisation, energy system planning, resilience, infrastructure investment and delivery risk.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex client challenges into compelling propositions, investment cases and practical implementation programmes.
  • Experience developing strategic client relationships, growing pipelines and supporting sales and business development activities within a consulting or advisory environment.
  • Strong commercial and financial acumen, with experience managing project performance, contractual arrangements and business outcomes.
  • Experience building teams, developing capability and contributing to the growth of consulting practices or advisory businesses.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, facilitation and communication skills, including experience presenting to executive audiences and leading senior workshops.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to mobilise multidisciplinary teams, build consensus and bring the full breadth of GHD’s capabilities to clients.

Working Location

GHD operates a Hybrid Working Standard across the Enterprise, with a minimum of three days per week at a GHD office. There is a preference for this role to be based in GHD’s London office, although we also have a number of other offices across the UK.
