Technical Director
Middlesbrough
Cognisant is partnering with an established PLC housebuilder to appoint a Technical Director for one of its growing Northern regions.
This is an opportunity to join a well-run business with an experienced, stable leadership team, a healthy land pipeline and several new developments due to commence over the coming years. The region is performing well and this appointment is focused on building upon that success rather than turning around an underperforming business.
Reporting directly to the Managing Director and sitting on the Regional Board, you will take full responsibility for the technical function, leading multidisciplinary teams across Technical, Engineering and Planning while working closely with Land, Commercial, Construction and Sales.
The Role
- Lead the regional Technical function, providing strategic direction across Technical, Engineering and Planning while ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and commercially.
- Drive technical delivery from land acquisition through planning, design, construction and final adoption, supporting the region's growth pipeline and business objectives.
- Lead, mentor and develop a high-performing technical team, fostering collaboration across Land, Commercial, Construction and Sales.
- Oversee technical due diligence, value engineering, consultant management, budgets and programme delivery to maximise commercial performance across all developments.
- Act as a key member of the Regional Board, influencing business strategy, supporting investment decisions and ensuring the region consistently meets its delivery and financial targets.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
