Technical Director - Hydrogeology

Technical Director – Hydrogeology (UK & Ireland)

About the Role

This is an exceptional opportunity for someone to join AECOM UK&I’s Hydrogeology Team as a Technical Director.

Join our dynamic Hydrogeology Team alongside other professionals delivering water environment-focused and multidisciplinary projects including:

  • Water resources planning
  • Major infrastructure projects (power networks, pipelines)
  • Renewable energy schemes (solar, wind, pumped storage hydro)
  • Coastal defences
  • Electricity transmission network reinforcement
  • Recreational infrastructure

The Technical Director will lead, mentate, and grow the Groundwater team of 30+ hydrogeologists across UK & Ireland, with exposure to international projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead water sector projects, strengthening client relationships and pursuing strategic opportunities
  • Serve as technical and project lead for Groundwater & Water Environment projects, including:
    • Project manager & approver
    • Lead verifier of technical work
  • Support and grow the UK&I hydrogeology team of 30+ professionals
  • Provide line management and leadership to retain, develop, and grow the team’s expertise
  • Drive project winning, client engagement, and delivery for major water projects
  • Guide team contributions to business strategy, including policy development

Requirements & Qualifications

We seek a senior professional with:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Hydrogeology (and Chartered Status)
  • Proven expertise in:
    • Broad groundwater resources & engineering knowledge
    • Deep leadership in the water sector, backed by publications and professional association roles
    • Water resources planning, renewable energy projects, and infrastructure schemes
  • Project and team leadership experience:
    • Experience winning business and managing client relationships
    • Skills in managing projects, budgets, and bid/tender processes
    • Capacity to review/verify technical submissions and support staff development
  • Demonstrated strategic adaptability in implementing business plans and governance policies
