About Our Maritime Business

Haskoning is at the forefront of international maritime planning, design, and development. Our global Maritime team is over 600‑strong, comprising multi‑disciplinary experts who deliver ports, shipyards, dry docks, and maritime infrastructure projects across five continents.

We are recognised as one of the largest and most experienced port, shipyard, and dry dock consultancies globally, and are world leaders in the production of feasibility studies, master plans, and detailed designs. From our UK Maritime offices, we lead major shipyard and naval infrastructure projects in close collaboration with colleagues worldwide.

Recent projects include:

Design of a lock for a new port in India Design of one of the world’s largest and most technically advanced shipyards in the Middle East, incorporating three dry docks over an area exceeding 1,000 hectares Structural assessment of dock gates in the North East of England Ongoing technical support to multiple UK Naval bases

Role Context:

Our Technical Director will provide managerial, technical and marketing support to the Maritime Arch Henderson team and also provide specialist support and input to our worldwide Maritime Teams.

You’ll be part of the Glasgow Maritime Team led by our Associate Director. The Glasgow team is part of the Maritime Arch Henderson Advisory Group, in 5 of our UK offices. Across the globe, Haskoning has 6,000 colleagues in 75 offices in more than 30 countries.

We are looking for someone to act as a subject matter expert and provide advice and guidance on the delivery of maritime civil engineering and designs and also the knowledge and experience to provide a link between our design teams and senior management.

Job Responsibilities:

Act as Project Director / Technical Lead on a range of projects principally relating to the field of maritime civil engineering. Supervise project staff and ensure delivery of projects within programme and budget constraints. Technical reviewer for the production of engineering design calculations, engineering design details and engineering reports for a range of projects relating to the field of maritime engineering. Oversee the production of technical, commercial and contractual documents for procurement of engineering projects. Present technical information to clients and internal audiences Apply sound engineering judgement and provide expert advice Establish and maintain excellent client relationships and be responsible for retention of business. Liaise with other business lines within the Haskoning organisation. Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and supervision to junior engineers, technicians, and project managers

Required Skills and Experience:

Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution such as ICE or IStructE Analytical Ability – proven ability to lead design and analysis work with limited support. Excellent knowledge and experience in maritime engineering and the development of practical solutions from concept through to construction Background and experience in the planning and design of maritime works / heavy civils projects Effective and proven leadership skills Good business sense with focus on delivering commercially successful projects Good oral and written communication skills Organised – show organisation, discipline, and a structured, consistent approach in the way you work. Independent thinker able to work competently within a team Personable, approachable, and able to build strong relationships across teams and with clients 15 to 20+ years’ experience, the majority within maritime civil engineering

Desireable:

Demonstrate experience in the development of port or shipyard infrastructure, such as heavy-duty quays, dry docks, or dock gates. Demonstrate commitment to training of junior staff e.g. as SCE / DE within an ICE training scheme. Willingness to travel occasionally throughout the UK and overseas.

Location

You will be based in our Glasgow office, hybrid working is possible, however there is a desire for a minimum of 3 days working in the office. If you are happy to regularly commute regionally and nationally our offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool or London are also a possibility.
