Technical & Engineering Director

Role Overview

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Engineering & Technical Director is responsible for ElecLink’s engineering integrity, asset management capability, and the development of our HVDC cable systems and converter station infrastructure in France, the Channel Tunnel, and the UK.

As a member of the ElecLink Senior Leadership Team (SLT), the role plays a pivotal part in:

  • Strategic decision-making
  • Cross-functional leadership
  • Alignment of technical activities with business and regulatory objectives

The Technical and Engineering Director will lead a multidisciplinary technical team of at least six staff, including:

  • Two senior managers
  • Engineering leads
  • Commercial contract support
  • Project management

This role is central to driving:

  • Cross-functional performance
  • Stakeholder management (internal and external)
  • Safe and successful operations of a nationally significant business.

Responsibilities

Organisational Leadership

  • Lead technical input to business strategy, risk management, and organisation development.
  • Develop and implement ElecLink’s overall technical strategy, ensuring alignment with:
    • Business case
    • Regulatory obligations
    • Project delivery schedule
  • Establish robust technical governance, including:
    • Design assurance capability
    • Technical risk management processes
    • Change control mechanisms
  • Represent the company at:
    • Technical forums
    • Industry groups
    • Critical regulatory discussions (promoting ElecLink’s interests)
  • Champion health, safety, environmental, and quality (HSEQ) culture and performance.

Lead the Technical Function

Direct a multi-disciplinary team focused on safe, reliable asset operations, including:

  • Engineering Managers – Oversee:
    • Converter and cable system maintenance
    • Day-to-day asset operations (via supplier contracts)
    • On-site physical & cyber security, OT system integrity
    • Strategic implementation of asset improvements

  • Engineers – Provide subject matter expertise in:

    • HVDC systems
    • Electrical engineering
    • Design assurance
    • Interconnector operations
  • Project Managers – Lead the coordination, delivery, and commissioning of the project pipeline

  • Commercial Contract Support – Manage interfaces between:

    • Engineering, procurement, legal, and commercial teams
    • Enforce industry best-practice service contracts

Engineering Strategy & Delivery

  • Accountable for HVDC infrastructure integrity, including:
    • Converter stations
    • Cable systems
    • Protection schemes
  • Direct interfaces with OEMs, technology partners, and service providers.
  • Optimise technical design for whole-of-life performance, including:
    • Maintainability
    • Operability
    • Reliability
  • Identify and implement industry best-practice standards to enhance technical capabilities.
  • Maintain engineering teams aligned with strategy and project execution.
  • Ensure timely delivery of capital and maintenance projects.
  • Facilitate cross-team collaboration (technical, operational, commercial) to:
    • Optimise system operations
    • Meet business objectives

Operations Management

  • Coordinate site-based engineering activities, including:
    • Inspection and maintenance schedules
  • Ensure operational excellence through compliance with:
    • UK and European standards
  • Develop and maintain 24/7 engineering support for HVDC assets (in-house + outsourced).
  • Oversee engineering risk management and root cause failure analysis.
  • Lead contractual relationships with service providers and OEMs (at Steering Committee level).

Health & Safety

  • All employees must adhere to:
    • Reasonable care for own health and safety (and others).
    • No interference with safety/health measures.
  • Must participate in health & safety training and report concerns to:
    • HSQE Manager or HSQE Coordinator.

Minimum Standards & Selection Criteria

Experience Required

  • >15 years in energy or transmission sector, with demonstrated HVDC systems experience.
  • Proven leadership/senior management of:
    • Engineering teams on major capital infrastructure projects.
    • Operational asset management.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • HVDC systems
    • Converter technologies
    • Grid codes
    • Transmission interface requirements
  • Commercial awareness of:
    • Engineering contracts
    • OEM supply agreements
    • Technical dispute resolution
  • Experience at senior/executive level, ideally:
    • SLT member or subsidiary board.
  • Knowledge of UK & European regulatory frameworks (for interconnectors/transmission) is desirable.

Education

  • Degree in Electrical or Power Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status is desirable.

    • Converter station technologies
    • HV cable systems

  • Effective communication & influence skills to shape technical strategy.
