Tech Lead – Manchester (Hybrid)
£85,000 – £100,000 Technologies: React, TypeScript, .NET Core, PHP
About the Role
We’re partnering with a fast-growing Manchester-based business that is rebuilding its technology capability from the ground up.
They’re looking for a hands-on Tech Lead to drive one of their core product squads. This is a genuine engineering leadership role for someone who still enjoys coding and staying close to the work.
Key Objectives:
- Lead a cross-functional squad that delivers customer-facing products used by millions of members across retail, rewards, and ecommerce-style digital experiences
- Fostering a culture of experimentation and fail-fast learning
- Advocating for a significant AI strategy, aiming to enhance developer workflows and member personalisation
- Transitioning from a PHP monolith to a React microservices architecture while ensuring existing systems (e.g. CMS spikes) remain functional
- Investing in AI tooling, engineering capabilities, and shaping technical direction and culture from an early stage.
Responsibilities
You’ll be responsible for:

Hands-on software engineering (70–80%) Alongside technical leadership for a team of around three people, focusing on quality engineering practices.

Architecture & Technical Leadership
- Overseeing a modern, full-stack environment centred around React, TypeScript, and .NET Core.
- Collaborating between Product, UX, and engineering teams to deliver customer-facing features
- Driving best practices in:
- Clean architecture
- Automated testing
- CI/CD pipelines
- Performance & maintainability

- AI & Engineering Transformation
- Introduce and coach the team on AI-assisted and agentic development workflows.
- Advocate for integrating tools that improve developer productivity and member experiences.
- Contribute to platform and architectural decisions across the engineering function.
Requirements
Essential Experience & Skills:

Frontend Development:
- Strong production experience with React and TypeScript
- Comfortable working with cleans architectural patterns and modern frameworks.

Backend & Legacy Systems:
- Production-level experience with PHP/Laravel (even if not currently in the role).
- Familiarity with Node.js or .NET Core is beneficial.

Delivery & Leadership:
- Preference for a hands-on technical leader rather than a purely managerial role.
- Deep understanding of software craftsmanship and the importance of:
- Automated testing
- CI/CD discipline
- Pragmatic mindset—skilled at balancing modern architectural improvements with real-world delivery pressures.

- Technical Intuition & AI Adoption:
- Curiosity towards AI technology and how it can streamline development workflows.
Nice to Have:
- React-Native experience.
- Azure ecosystem familiarity.
- Background in ecommerce, rewards systems, loyalty programs, fintech, digital marketplaces, or consumer-focused digital products.

Compensation & Work Flexibility

Salary: £85,000–£100,000 (based on relevant experience).

Hybrid setup: Three office days per week in a Manchester City Centre location, with a space designed for agile, whiteboard-driven collaboration.
