Tech Lead – Digital Infrastructure Platform

£110,000–£130,000 + bonus + benefits | Hybrid (3 days/week) | London

Real-time systems don't forgive weak architecture. When a platform's whole value proposition is intelligent, seamless automation, every backend decision either holds up under scale or becomes the thing that quietly breaks it.

That's the problem a rapidly growing tech-for-good company has built its platform around, using data, automation and smart integrations to optimise real-time operations for its users. As the product scales, so does the pressure on the engineering behind it, and that's where this Tech Lead role comes in.

This is a hands-on Tech Lead position, not a title without teeth. You'll take real ownership of system design and architecture for key backend services, write production code in Kotlin or Java, and lead one of the company's high-performing product engineering teams day to day. As Tech Lead you're expected to be in the code as often as you're in the architecture discussions, setting technical direction through code review and decision-making rather than delegating it away.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

The stack sits firmly in the JVM ecosystem, built out with Spring Boot or Ktor for robust, API-first microservices. The engineering culture leans on SOLID principles, test-driven development and proper software design, not shortcuts dressed up as pragmatism. Agile is the operating rhythm, with genuine peer review and pair programming built into how the team works day to day.

Beyond the code, this Tech Lead will work closely with product managers and business stakeholders to keep technical direction aligned with commercial goals, mentor engineers across a cross-functional team, and drive improvements to engineering practices and tooling as the backend scales to meet growing demand. It's a role with real line management responsibility, for a Tech Lead who wants to stay deeply technical rather than drift into pure management.

You'll enjoy this Tech Lead role if you:

  • Have strong commercial experience in the JVM ecosystem and want architectural ownership, not just delivery
  • Can hold your own writing production code and mentoring a team in the same week
  • Like translating ambitious commercial goals into scalable technical decisions
  • Want line management responsibility without giving up hands-on engineering
  • Care about resilient, secure, well-tested code as a default, not an afterthought
  • Are energised by fast-moving, mission-driven environments
