Innovation Engineering Lead (AI/LLM Development) – Factor

Forge contracted solutions at enterprise scale, partnering with corporate legal departments (e.g., Fortune 500 companies, global banks, pharma, and tech firms) to tackle scale-driven challenges like contracting and compliance.
The Innovation Team’s Mission
Build custom AI-powered tools and legal workflow client solutions, blending software engineering with cutting-edge AI. A self-sufficient, high-autonomy internal group, this team is responsible for delivering systems that enhance lawyer productivity, streamline legal processes, and unlock new business value.
As the lead, you’ll balance technical execution, team guidance, and strategic direction for a hybrid-working unit operating across EMEA/NA.
Key Responsibilities
🔧 Engineering & Delivery
- Steer end-to-end development of client-facing software and AI-powered legal workflow tools, serving high-end law firms and professional services.
- Architect and design systems from strategy to deployment, with 100% ownership of feasibility, technical pipelines, and scalability.
- Integrate Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI capabilities into production legal applications (e.g., contract automation, matter workflows).
- Assess RFPs/internal projects, balancing urgency, complexity, and resource feasibility.
- Cloud infrastructure management: AWS, Azure, GCP, via IaC (Terraform, Bicep) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).
- Cross-team contributor: Work closely with legal technologists, product, and UI/UX leads.

🚀 Team Leadership
- Be the AI/LLM subject matter expert—source emerging methodologies (e.g., custom LLMs, pretraining/finetuning approaches) for the team.
- Stimulate a culture of experimental rigor: share knowledge, incubate pioneer projects, and scale innovation safely.
- Champion client-facing technical collaboration, facilitating technical stakeholder conversations with partners at top-tier AmLaw firms.
- 1:1 coaching, career development, technical mentorship—mentor engineers over staffing growth phases.
- Set/enforce engineering excellence standards (code quality, testing, observability—o11y, CI/CD, automated testing policies).
- Handle full-cycle hiring, from talent sourcing to onboarding, ensuring quality cultural fits.
Requirements
📌 Required Skills & Experience
✅ 10+ years in software engineering (C-level or org-leadership friends preferred), 2+ years managing teams.
- Full-stack proficiency with:
- Languages: JavaScript/TypeScript, Python
- Frontend: React/Node.js
- Backend: PostgreSQL + scalable microservices
- Cloud natives: AWS/Azure/GCP actions (deployment, scaling, cost).
- DevOps pipelines: CI/CD (GitHub Actions), infrastructure-as-code. ✅ Proven LLM/AI production integration—contributing to deployed models, prompting streams, or chain-of-thought assessment tools. ✅ Research-driven coder: comfortable making high-roughness calls with avoidable uncertainty. ✅ Tool-derived workflows: experience with agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) and their production use cases. ✅ Client-ready communication—pronounced ability to architect complex solutions and articulate them across disparities (tech <-> business <-> legal stakeholders).
