Position Overview
We are seeking a technically driven Technical Lead with 10+ years of experience to play a pivotal role in shaping and scaling our Ground Investigation capability within our Aviation division. This is a pure technical track role, designed for an experienced professional who wants to focus entirely on engineering excellence, quality, and technical leadership.
Reporting directly to the Ground Investigation Lead, you will act as their technical right-hand, taking ownership of the standards, frameworks, and quality benchmarks that will define the department as it grows.
What You Will Do
- Write, critically review, and technically sign off on Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Interpretive Reports
- Act as the department’s primary Technical Authority and QA lead, ensuring consistently high-quality, defect-free outputs
- Serve as the internal specialist for ground modelling, challenging geotechnical and geo-environmental designs and risk assessments
- Author, standardise, and implement the team’s technical templates, assessment sheets, and SOPs to ensure compliance with industry-leading industry standards
- Build and refine technical frameworks and quality standards to support departmental growth
- Ensure Health & Safety and environmental compliance, including reviewing/producing RAMS, and promoting a proactive safety culture
- Identify risks and drive continuous improvement in safety and technical delivery practices
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior staff
- Collaborate with geospatial and utility mapping teams to integrate GI data into broader service offerings
- Support procurement, mobilisation, and technical planning for ground investigation works
- Contribute to the training and development of new and existing staff
- Support business development activities through technical input and GI scoping
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of departmental processes and delivery standards

What You Will Bring
- A degree in Geology or an Earth Sciences-related discipline
- Chartered status in a relevant field (e.g., CGeol)
- 10+ years’ experience within the UK Ground Investigation or engineering geology sector
- A strong track record in:
- Technical delivery
- Report writing
- Critical review
- Expertise in in-situ testing methods (e.g., CPT, CBR, DCP, PLT) and logging to BS5930 / Eurocode 7
- Proficiency in geotechnical software, such as Bentley OpenGround
- A strong understanding of Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) standards
- Proven ability to create:
- Technical frameworks
- Templates
- Guidelines and workflows
- Experience in:
- Scoping GI enquiries
- Designing site investigation strategies
- Full clean UK/EU Driving Licence and willingness to travel occasionally
- Full right to work in the UK
- CSCS card (preferred but can be obtained post-hire)
