Technical Lead, Product

Technical Lead, Product

At Bioptimus, we are building the universal AI foundation model for biology to accelerate innovation in biomedicine.

About the Role

We are searching for a Technical Lead to develop the product layer that connects our foundation models for biology directly to scientists and engineers. This role involves designing and building everything from backend services that power our models to APIs that shape product capabilities, as well as the frontend interfaces that scientists interact with. You’ll work with our Product Engineers to bring cutting-edge research into practical, well-engineered tools—shaping the technical direction, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with R&D to drive impactful, dependable software.

This is a technical leadership role focused on execution, rather than direct management. You will lead by shipping high-complexity features yourself, defining standards, and influencing engineers through pair programming and code reviews. While we anticipate growth opportunities in formal leadership if desired, this is not a requirement of the role.

Key Responsibilities

Product Development (End-to-End)

  • Design, build, test, and deploy features across backend services and frontend interfaces for our B2B biology products.
  • Champion features from idea to production, balancing speed, quality, and maintainability alongside stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with scientists and developers to translate technical complexity into intuitive, usable experiences.

Backend & Services Architecture

  • Develop and maintain robot, scalable APIs (REST/gRPC) that compose foundation models into tangible product capabilities.
  • Design robust cloud-native data workflows and manage the underlying infrastructure (e.g., Python, SQL, databases).

Leveraging Foundational Layers

  • Build product solutions on top of our SDKs and foundation models, providing iterative feedback to refine foundational interfaces.
  • Seamlessly integrate cutting-edge models and frameworks into actionable workflows.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Set engineering standards, design patterns, and coding frameworks for the teams you influence.
  • Lead cross-cutting solutions for ambiguous challenges and mentor engineers at all levels.
  • Establish best practices that align with AI-native workflows (e.g., agentic coding tools like Optica or Claude).

Driving Collaboration

  • Bridge gaps between scientists, product teams, and engineering to ship tools that meet real-world needs.
  • Act as thought partner with payload engineers and infrastructure teams on architectural trade-offs.

AI-Assisted Development

  • Pioneer the use of co-pilot tools to accelerate product delivery and champion AI-driven methodologies within the team.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Who You Are

We seek a senior engineer who thrives in ambiguity and brings clarity to technical challenges. This is a role for someone who:

Technical Proficiencies

  • Python Expertise: 4+ years mastering production-grade Python with a strong emphasis on clear, maintainable, and well-tested code.
  • Full-Stack Acumen: Proficient in backend (RESTful APIs, gRPC, message queues) and comfortable with frontend (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Vue).
  • Data & Infrastructure: Skilled in SQL, NoSQL, or data modeling, with extensive experience designing pipelines for large-scale data loads.
  • Cloud Technology: Hands-on experience deploying with containers (Docker/Kubernetes) on AWS (preferred) or GCP/Azure.
  • CI/CD & DevOps: Practical knowledge of continuous integration, automation, and modern software delivery pipelines.
  • Machine Learning Fluency: Awareness of (but not strictly required for) deep learning platforms like PyTorch or JAX and frameworks such as Hugging Face Transformers.

Design & Leadership

  • System Architecture: Experience architecting large-scale systems with an eye for scalability, performance, and modularity.
  • Technical Influence: Proven ability to set design direction for cross-team initiatives and guide less-seasoned engineers via mentorship.
  • API Collaboration: Extensive experience designing and integrating complex APIs for consumers across technical domains.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Clarity & Empathy: Bridges gaps between purely technical and non-technical audiences (e.g., explaining trade-offs to biologists, DevOps, or executives).
  • Result-Oriented Team Player: Independent, detail-obsessed, and able to navigate ambiguity with excitement, not fear.
  • Cross-Functional Agility: Vet core use cases with domain experts prior to implementation.

Education & Language

  • Academic Background: Either an MSc in Computer Science, enginnering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • Fluency: Professional English (primary medium for collaboration).

Plus Factors

These are not mandatory but would strengthen your candidacy in competitive discussions.

  • Experience in Pharma, Biotech, or Healthcare’s R&D ecosystem.
  • Hands-on experience crafting developer APIs or SaaS platforms used by external customers.
  • Track record leading engineering teams or owning high-visibility products.
  • Deep AWS/ML expertise, particularly with SageMaker (serverless), EC2, RDS, or S3/IAM tools.
  • Experience in the AI lifecycle—deployment, scaling, low-latency inference, and model optimization.
  • Frontend capabilities focused on data-rich scientific visualizations or interactive dashboards.
  • Contributions to or maintenance of open-source projects (especially ML/AI).
  • Prior performance in startup or fast-moving innovation cultures, showcasing adaptability.
