Position Description
At CGI, you'll lead the engineering direction of digital services that help citizens, legal professionals and government access justice through modern technology. Working across one of our key UK Government Department programmes, you'll influence the delivery of secure, resilient and scalable services while mentoring technical leaders and driving engineering excellence. You'll play a pivotal role in shaping how emerging AI capabilities are responsibly introduced to enhance software delivery and service outcomes, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to solve complex challenges while developing your own career within one of the UK's leading technology consultancies.

Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a hybrid position.
Your future duties and responsibilities
In this role, you will provide senior technical leadership across multiple product teams delivering business-critical services within the programme. Working alongside architects, Product Managers and Delivery Managers, you will ensure engineering teams deliver secure, scalable and high-quality solutions that align with long-term platform strategy while meeting the evolving needs of the programme.
You will mentor Technical Leads and senior engineers, helping to embed engineering best practice, strengthen technical capability and drive continuous improvement across the programme. You'll also play a key role in identifying opportunities to introduce AI-enabled capabilities and AI-assisted engineering practices, ensuring innovation is adopted responsibly to improve productivity, software quality and service outcomes.

Key responsibilities
- Lead & Mentor Technical Leads across multiple engineering teams, fostering technical excellence and continuous improvement.
- Guide & Review complex software designs and implementation, providing hands-on technical leadership where required.
- Collaborate & Deliver with architects, Product Managers and Delivery Managers to translate architecture into successful delivery.
- Champion & Embed engineering best practices including secure software development, code quality, automated testing and DevOps.
- Drive & Support delivery of cloud-native services using modern engineering approaches and technologies.
- Identify & Introduce AI-enabled capabilities that improve user services and operational efficiency.
- Enable & Promote AI-assisted software engineering practices to enhance developer productivity and software quality.
- Manage & Mitigate technical risks, cross-team dependencies and delivery challenges.
- Support & Develop engineering talent through mentoring, coaching, recruitment and onboarding.
- Influence & Improve engineering standards across the wider programme.
Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role
To succeed in this role, you'll bring extensive technical leadership experience delivering complex digital services within enterprise or regulated environments. You'll combine strong hands-on engineering expertise with the ability to mentor senior technical professionals, influence strategic technical decisions and drive the adoption of modern engineering and AI-enabled delivery practices.
Essential Qualifications
- Significant experience leading software engineering teams delivering complex digital services.
- Proven experience mentoring Technical Leads, senior engineers or multiple development teams.
- Strong hands-on software engineering experience with Java, Angular, Node.js and Express.js.
- Experience designing and supporting distributed systems and microservices architectures.
- Strong knowledge of PostgreSQL or other enterprise SQL databases.
- Experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), Azure Service Bus and Application Insights.
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling including Git, Jenkins and Terraform.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working within highly regulated or public sector environments is advantageous.
- Understanding of AI-assisted software development, Azure OpenAI or other LLM-based services is desirable.
- Knowledge of responsible AI principles and governance considerations is desirable.
