Technical Manager

Location: Kent

Salary: £66,000 to £83,000

The Opportunity

The Technical Manager is responsible for all technical aspects of the product portfolio. Including:

  • Developing/selecting formulations,
  • Agreeing associated product performance claims,
  • Managing MSDSs and related label elements, and
  • Provision of technical service and training to staff and customers globally across all relevant geographies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and deployment of product formulations for own-brand and private label products, ensuring compliance with performance standards and claims.
  • Oversee product line technical maintenance, positioning and updating product performance and specifications to ensure competitive and compliant offerings.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with raw material suppliers, technology partners, and third-party manufacturers.
  • Develop and manage product technical strategies, with a focus on:
    • Cost reduction,
    • Efficiency improvements,
    • Product lifecycle management.
  • Monitor market and industry trends to identify opportunities related to performance, pricing, and supply chain optimisation.
  • Oversee technical training, product support, and engineering services for internal teams and customers across relevant regions.
  • Provide technical guidance to support:
    • Manufacturing,
    • Supply chain,
    • Procurement,
    • Sales,
    • Marketing activities.
  • Oversee technical governance, regulatory compliance reporting, budgeting, and act as a representative within:
    • Industry bodies,
    • Global technical functions.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance across the product portfolio, including:
    • MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) management,
    • Label compliance,
    • Approvals,
    • OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) requirements.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree qualification in:
    • Engineering,
    • Science,
    • Chemistry,
    • Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in the lubricant segment:
    • Lubes,
    • Greases,
    • Coolants.
  • Experience in the lubricant sector with expertise in:
    • Deployment Technology,
    • R&D (Research and Development),
    • TS&D (Technical Service & Development),
    • Customer Technical Support.
  • Knowledge of CDP (Chemical Data Protection) management.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory compliance for oil and chemical products:
    • ATIEL (Association Technique de l'Industrie des Lubrifiants Européennes),
    • European specifications (ACEA),
    • OEM specifications,
    • REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction of Chemicals),
    • VLS (Volatility Loss Specifications) and others.
  • Exposure to a solid knowledge of formulations and raw materials, including base oils and additives:
    • Understanding of petrochemical supply chain dynamics.
  • High commercial acumen, complemented by:
    • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, sufficient to engage with stakeholders at all levels effectively.
  • Proven capabilities in:
    • Stakeholder management,
    • Prioritisation,
    • Project management,
    • Time management.
  • Fluent English language skills.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree or MBA.
  • Cross-cultural awareness and international business experience.
  • Proven negotiation skills and ability to manage strategic supplier/customer dynamics.
  • Experience identifying:
    • Commercial growth opportunities,
    • Technical growth opportunities.
  • Experience using:
    • SAP S/4HANA,
    • Dashboard development tools.
  • An understanding of product lifecycle management principles.
  • Second language capability.
