Job Title – Technical Manager - Mechanical SME

Location – UK

Purpose of the Role:

The Technical Manager will be an important member of the Engineering Management Team. They will be directly responsible for providing technical leadership / business improvement in a specific area of expertise, for the benefit of the whole of Engineering. This will require the development of a proactive relationship with the Engineering Leadership Team, Design Delivery Managers, Framework Design Managers, Discipline Managers and external clients, but will deliberately not be on project critical paths for delivery activities. This role is pivotal to drive initiatives and support the success of our strategic engineering objectives, both internally and externally.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Be proactive and, accountable to the Engineering Leadership Team, driving forward your agreed strategy to add value to GT
  • Be able to respond to business challenges that require expert attention in your area.
  • Provide specialist advice, control and assurance on all discipline specific, scientific, technical and engineering principles.
  • Utilise your expertise to train / develop Engineers within your specific discipline
  • Communicate ideas to stakeholders, clients and colleagues based on examples of application or first principles when implementing new and/or innovative solutions.
  • Adherence, compliance and challenge (where applicable) all relevant client and industry standards and legislation.
  • Supporting Technical Governance and Assurance where required.
  • Act as an Internal Disruptor and Innovator.
  • Seek innovation to challenge industry norms to allow the Engineering function to be more effective and efficient
  • Drive Engineering initiatives.
  • Work externally as SMEs in chosen field to support Consultancy development
  • Client interfacing on technical leadership.
  • Support work winning and develop an industry wide peer network.
  • Seek and demonstrate both personal and company recognition in your area of expertise.
  • Maintain a commitment to personal development in your area of expertise.
  • Develop and manage relationships, this will be a key area of focus.
  • Work closely with other members of the Engineering senior management team to ensure effective understanding of wider needs, risks and opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with GT BMS and other relevant management systems.
  • Implement Galliford Try’s Carbon, Digital, DfMA and Innovation strategy and ambition.
  • Implement and comply with Galliford Try’s SHE policy and procedures, all legal requirements, and best practice within the business unit creating a knowingly safe environment.
  • Embody Galliford Try’s values (EPIC) towards its customers and to promote its vision to become the most highly respected company in the industry.

About You

  • Be a Subject Matter Expert in an area key to Engineering delivery / Strategy development
  • Successful demonstrable experience of management of internal / external design functions
  • Ability to interact at all levels of the business and promote best practice and where appropriate innovation
  • Ability to lead initiatives and support design teams from both third-party providers and internal capability
  • Critical thinking & problem solving
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Ability to prioritise activities in a challenging environment
  • Skilled at balancing the big picture with the need to get into detail
  • Commercial awareness and understanding
  • Manage performance: monitor, give feedback, and confront issues.
  • Analytical with the ability to quickly assimilate information and present concise at various levels
  • Able to develop ideas and present them concisely
  • Strong persuasive communication skills in writing, oral and presentations
  • Engineering background (ideally with a good understanding of all engineering disciplines associated to the design and delivery of projects)
  • Design and/or Project Management experience ideally in Water industry
  • Degree in Engineering (MEng, MSc, BEng, Bsc..) preferred or relevant Construction, Manufacturing, Project Management or STEM related qualification.
  • Professional membership and qualification of a related Institution an advantage
  • Experience in implementing Digital Technologies and/or Advanced Applications within construction projects
  • Good IT skills including software skills in MS Excel & Word
