Building Environment Director – Healthcare Sector Location/s: Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester; UK

Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management, and development consultancy with over 20,000 employees across more than 50 countries and 140+ offices.

We work across diverse industries, delivering innovative projects that shape a sustainable future and positively impact communities. Our success is driven by our people – we thrive when they succeed. We foster collaboration, growth, and excellence, ensuring each individual can flourish within our proudly employee-owned organisation.

Overview of the Role

To meet the evolving demands of tomorrow’s built environment, Mott MacDonald plays a pivotal role in shaping net zero carbon policy and healthcare infrastructure. This Director-level opportunity is for a seasoned professional to lead healthcare sector business development and provide technical excellence across built environment projects in the UK and Europe.

The role will focus on:

  • Technical bid activity
  • Client relationship building through expertise in site decarbonisation, MEP system adaptation, MMC/DfMA design, structural modifications, and more.
  • Independent delivery of high-calibre technical advisory services with minimal oversight, contingent on meeting time and budget goals.

As part of an established practice, you will support a respected Healthcare sector team delivering project success through innovation and career growth in the built environment.

Responsibilities

Core Accountabilities

  • Lead all aspects of assigned healthcare sector built environment projects, from start to finish.
  • Guide national project teams, mentoring engineers and driving excellence in healthcare project delivery.
  • Engage across engineering disciplines, driving bids and delivering technical insights.
  • Represent the firm to clients on technical matters.
  • Assist senior managers with commercial and contractual project metrics.

Technical Delivery & Leadership

The role demands autonomous management of both small and large projects, with responsibility for:

  • Leading MEP (with some strategic structural) engineering projects.
  • Managing external stakeholders to ensure client satisfaction and relationship growth.
  • Mastery of industry-standard software (IES, Revit, ADB Codebook, DRofus).
  • Developing, tracking, and managing project timelines and deliverables to meet targets.
  • Scrutinising budgets and profitability, with agility to identify, mitigate, and communicate risks.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
