Technical Product Owner - Banking Technology - Java

We are seeking an experienced Technical Product Owner to join a fast-growing technology business building modern banking platform capabilities for financial institutions. This is a highly technical Product Ownership role, working at the intersection of banking, product, engineering and platform delivery. This role would suit a Product Owner who is comfortable working closely with engineering teams building Java-based microservices, deployed on Kubernetes, with Kafka and event-driven architecture at the heart of the platform. You do not need to be a hands-on developer, but you must be technically credible enough to work with engineers, architects and senior stakeholders on complex platform decisions.

The role

As Technical Product Owner, you will take ownership of product backlog, requirements and delivery priorities for a cloud-native banking platform. You will work closely with software engineers, architects, delivery leads, business stakeholders and senior product leaders to define what needs to be built, why it matters, and how it should be prioritised. The role requires someone who can understand both the commercial value of banking products and the technical realities of building scalable, secure, regulated financial technology platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and prioritise the product backlog for core banking platform capabilities.
  • Translate product strategy, customer needs and business objectives into clear technical requirements.
  • Work closely with engineering teams building Java-based microservices and distributed systems.
  • Define user stories, acceptance criteria, product flows and functional requirements.
  • Partner with architects and technical leads on platform design, integration points and technical trade-offs.
  • Support delivery of event-driven capabilities using Kafka and related messaging technologies.
  • Help shape Kubernetes-based, cloud-native platform features and operational improvements.
  • Balance new feature development with technical debt, scalability, resilience and regulatory considerations.
  • Engage with stakeholders from product, engineering, operations, compliance and commercial teams.
  • Ensure engineering teams have clear priorities, context and success criteria.
  • Contribute to roadmap planning for platform evolution and customer-facing banking capabilities.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You

You are a technically strong Product Owner who enjoys working with engineering teams on complex platform products. You can discuss product outcomes with business stakeholders, but you are equally comfortable talking to engineers about APIs, microservices, Kafka topics, Kubernetes deployments, integration patterns and technical constraints. You understand that great product ownership in a banking technology environment is not just about writing user stories. It is about making informed prioritisation decisions, understanding risk, maintaining delivery momentum and helping shape scalable products that can operate safely in regulated financial services environments. This is a role for someone who wants to help build the next generation of banking technology platforms.

Why This Role?

This is an opportunity to work on a modern financial technology platform designed to help banks become more agile, responsive and programmable without replacing the infrastructure that underpins their stability and compliance. You will be working on products that sit at the heart of modern banking transformation: real-time decisioning, event-driven architecture, configurable financial products, cloud-native delivery and scalable platform engineering.
