Technical Project Lead: Modelling / Simulation – Bristol
We are assisting a leading defence development, engineering and manufacturing company, which is seeking a Technical Project Lead: Modelling and Simulation Engineer to join their Simulation, Dynamics and Control capability group.
Due to ongoing projects and growth, they require a talented and experienced Modelling and Simulation Engineer to strengthen their expanding team within a Marine Business Unit, delivering for both commercial and defence sectors. They’re considering contract or permanent employment at this time.
Role Overview
The Simulation, Dynamics and Control team provides expertise to both internal and external clients across:
- Control systems
- System performance analysis
- Equipment modelling
- Vehicle dynamics
Modelling, simulation, and control have been central to the client’s capabilities since their founding over 30 years ago. They specialise in:
- Developing advanced model-based design techniques
- Reverse engineering
- Root cause analysis
- Real-time modelling
Projects span:
- Aircraft modifications (both civil and military)
- Aerospace OEM development projects
- Feasibility studies for eVTOLs
- Flight controller and actuation development
- Submarine autopilot and flight control laws automation

The role requires predominantly on-site work in Bristol, with occasional travel to client sites. Hybrid working is an option.
Responsibilities
The Technical Project Lead will:
- Lead a team responsible for client engagement, project planning, task delegation, and model development of control and monitoring systems for vehicles and equipment.
- Utilise MathWorks toolsets (including Simulink) and collaborative tools (Jira and Confluence).
Core responsibilities (scoped by experience):
- Work closely with the Engineering Manager to align with project plans, timelines, sprint objectives, and requirements management.
- Define sprint tasks, track progress, and manage technical risks.
- Apply engineering best practices and quality assurance to guarantee project delivery.
- Mentor the team to clarify requirements and drive on-schedule task completion.
- Lead Agile/Scrum ceremonies (Daily Stand-up, refinement, sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives).
- Review and merge MATLAB/Simulink deliverables.
- Coordinate with cross-functional project teams for dependency alignment and implementation support.

Requirements
Education
- Degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline—preferably Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics.
- Strong theoretical and practical understanding of system modelling principles through experience.
Essential Skills
- Technical leadership, project risk management, and task delegation
- Fluency in MATLAB and Simulink
- Experience in control systems or software development
- Proven team leadership and mentoring track record
- Customer-facing experience with collaboration expertise
- Systems engineering methodology
Preferred Skills
- Marine sector expertise
- Experience running projects in Agile/Scrum frameworks
- Jira and Confluence proficiency
- Version control knowledge (e.g., Git with Bitbucket/SourceTree)
- Advanced expertise in control theory (e.g., Kalman filters, state estimation)
- Hands-on experience with real-time simulation development
