MPI are looking for a Technical Project Manager

Location - Chippenham

Outside IR35

Contract Dates - 03/08/2026 - 30/09/2026

Role Overview

Responsible for end-to-end delivery of software-based railway products deployed on standardised hardware platforms, ensuring safety, quality, security, cost, and schedule objectives are met. Operates within APM frameworks and Agile delivery environments for safety-related systems such as Traffic Management, ETCS, and signalling control systems.

Key Responsibilities – Project Delivery (APM Framework)

  • Full lifecycle delivery (Concept to Closeout)
  • Project Management Plans, schedules, budgets, resource planning, RAID management, governance reporting, and delivery against baselines.
  • Management and maintenance of, and delivery against software configuration baselines.
  • Management and maintenance of, and delivery against software configuration baselines.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead delivery of software-based products on standard hardware, integration across software and hardware, system architecture, integration strategy, and V&V oversight.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with clients Lifecycle development process, CENELEC standards (EN 50126/8/9), CSM-RA, UK rail standards, support safety cases, hazard logs, SIL activities, and liaison with ISA.

Agile & Software Delivery

  • Use Agile/hybrid methods, facilitate sprint ceremonies, manage backlogs, prioritisation, and align Agile delivery with stage-gate governance.

Stakeholder Management

  • Engage clients, engineering teams, suppliers; manage expectations, reporting, and escalations.

Commercial & Contractual

  • Support NEC contracts, manage change control, supplier performance, and support bids and estimates.

Team Leadership

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams, foster collaboration, continuous improvement, and mentor staff.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Experience in railway software/control systems, systems engineering lifecycle, APM principles, Agile frameworks, safety-critical systems, and stakeholder management.
  • Proven software project management experience, use of tools such as Polarion or JIRA to track software changes and documentation,

Desirable

  • Experience with TM, ETCS, WESTCAD, ARS, standard hardware platforms, cybersecurity, and Tier 1 rail organisations.
  • Experience with software development, ideally c#, C++.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering/Computer Science
  • APM PMQ or equivalent
  • Agile certification desirable
