Technical Riding Inspector – Permanent

Location: Bristol

Hitachi Rail is seeking a dedicated and skilled Technical Riding Inspector with a passion for railways and technology. This critical role ensures the safety, reliability, and performance of Hitachi’s rolling stock assets within a fast-paced, operational environment.


Competitive Package

  • Salary: £62,325
  • Shift Allowance: 15%
  • Location Allowance: £3,000
  • Flexible shift pattern (permanent contract)

About the Role

As a Technical Riding Inspector, you’ll deliver rapid fault-finding and diagnostic solutions to maintain service performance, operational capability, and train safety. You’ll work on both on-track and depot work, ensuring faults are resolved efficiently to minimise downtime.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fault Analysis & Repairs

    • Undertake fault-finding and diagnostics on Hitachi rolling stock in-service and at depots.
    • Learn, interpret, and apply technical drawings, specifications, and engineering processes.
    • Conduct removal, replacement, modification, or manufacturing of components using hand tools and engineering standards.
    • Log and maintain accurate records in SAP for all maintenance actions.
  • Operational & Customer Collaboration

    • Support the Maintenance Control team within the Rail Maintenance Control Centre.
    • Collaborate with customers to optimize operational desks, improving service times and reliability.
    • Travel across the network to attend in-service failures and assist Network Rail/stakeholders.

  • Technical Problem Solving

    • Recognise repeated faults and suggest sustainable repair solutions.
    • Develop technical scopes of work for cross-functional teams.
    • Provide real-time technical support during in-service failures when required.

    • Ensure all rolling stock meets operational specifications.

About You

Essential Skills & Qualifications

✔ Proven experience in stock-specific maintenance & fault diagnosis (preferably for rolling stock or rail systems). ✔ Full valid UK driving licence. ✔ HNC qualification in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent engineering apprenticeship completion). ✔ NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline (mandatory).


Technical Proficiency

🔧 Diagnostic experience (4G tablets, laptops, and hand tools already used within the role). 📊 Intermediate IT skills (Microsoft Word/Excel preferred but not essential).

Desired Experience (Not Mandatory)

Previous experience in train inspection, technical fault-fixing, or a similar role.
