Technical Support Engineer

# Biomedical Engineer Opportunity

Role Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Biomedical Engineer to join the Medical Device Service at Northern Care Alliance NHS Trust.

This Trust-wide role requires deployment across multiple NCA sites, including community services, whilst being based at Rochdale Infirmary. You’ll play a vital role within a multi-professional Medical Devices Team, delivering engineering, governance, and training support to diverse care settings.


About the Role

The successful candidate will:

  • Maintain and repair a wide variety of medical equipment
  • Investigate and resolve faults reported by users
  • Drive to community sites for servicing, repair, and delivery of equipment
  • Assist with the commissioning and testing of new medical devices
  • Provide technical support and training for clinical users to optimise equipment usage
  • Contribute to medical device governance (training, risk management, regulatory compliance)
  • Support investigations into adverse incidents or supplier recall notifications
  • Collaborate with external suppliers and senior engineers
  • Operate within trust policies and local procedures
  • Continuously update knowledge through CPD (Continuing Professional Development)

Person Specification & Qualifications

  • Qualifications:
    • Minimum qualification required: HNC in Electronics or a clinical engineering qualification
  • Experience:
    • Demonstrated capability in maintaining medical equipment
    • Committed to cross-disciplinary development

  • Grade Potential:
    • Entry-level experience? Appointment at Band 4 with structured progression to Band 5
    • Existing experience may enable placement at Band 5/6, pending qualification alignment

External Criteria (Mandatory)

  • An up-to-date full UK driving licence is mandatory.
  • A non-UK licence must fall under current exchangeable categories here.

Key Responsibilities

Service Delivery

  • Routine preventative and breakdown maintenance on medical devices
  • Reporting and logging maintenance data into the equipment database
  • Comprehensive pre-use checks and decommissioning testing
  • Troubleshooting, remedial repairs, or escalating complex faults

Clinical Engagement

  • Supporting end-users, clinicians, and healthcare staff in optimal equipment utilisation
  • Teaching safe operation, troubleshooting, and basic maintenance checks
  • Facilitating user training sessions in adherence to policy

Governance & Compliance

  • Participation in risk assessments for new purchases, installations, and recalls
  • Linking users and manufacturers during incidents or supplier-alert responses
  • Ensuring regulatory compliance within medical device policies

Collaboration

  • Working cooperatively with engineering colleagues to ensure flexible, high-quality services
  • Coordination with external suppliers as required
