Technical Systems & Applications Engineer / Scientist
Location: Dorchester, Dorset, UK
Job type: Full-time, permanent
Reporting to: Principal Development Engineer
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
About the role
We are looking for a Technical Systems & Applications Engineer / Scientist to join our Software & Systems team, working closely with our Principal Development Engineer and colleagues across the business.
Working between customers, engineering, sales, documentation, support, and delivery, you will help technical information flow clearly between customers and internal teams. This includes turning customer requirements into clear technical information, proposals, documentation, and well-coordinated project activity.
The position is broader than a traditional applications engineer role. It combines technical understanding, customer communication, documentation, and coordination, including support for system testing, demonstrations, handovers, and improvements to the way technical work is organised across the team.
No prior ultrasound experience required
What matters most is that you can learn technical concepts quickly, communicate clearly, stay organised, and work effectively with both customers and engineering colleagues.
Over time, this role offers the opportunity to build deep product and applications knowledge, become a trusted technical point of contact, and help shape how we support customers and deliver complex systems.
What we offer
- Company pension scheme
- Health insurance cash plan
- 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays
- Patent reward scheme recognising technical innovation
- Opportunity to work on specialist technology used by customers worldwide
- Varied role within a small, supportive technical team
- Opportunity to shape the role around your strengths and interests
- Exposure to multidisciplinary systems combining mechanics, electronics, software, measurement science, and customer applications
About the company
Precision Acoustics designs and manufactures specialist ultrasound measurement and characterisation systems used by research, medical, and industrial customers worldwide. Our systems combine precision mechanics, ultrasound measurement hardware, signal processing, motion control, and bespoke software. We are a technically and scientifically driven business working in a specialist field where clear communication, practical problem solving, and attention to detail are essential.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
