Technical Team Leader (APHA)

Primary Locations: Horley, Canterbury, Leicester, Lincoln

Job Description

We are looking for a confident and inspiring Technical Team Leader (TTL) to lead and manage a team of technical field staff within APHA, helping to protect animal health, safeguard animal welfare, and support international trade. Using your strong interpersonal skills, you will oversee a geographically dispersed delivery team, providing leadership and line management to a multidisciplinary group of Animal Health Officers and Egg Marketing Inspectors.

The role offers two distinct fixed terms (12 months each):

  • Horley or Canterbury
  • Leicester or Lincoln

Offers will be made in merit order by location.

As a Technical Team Leader, you will be accountable for the effective management of resources, prioritising workloads to meet delivery targets and collaborating with Technical Advisors to ensure your team possesses the capability to respond to:

  • Emergencies
  • Disease outbreaks

As a visible leader, you will:

The role involves diverse responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Leading and managing local and geographically dispersed technical staff, ensuring optimal resource deployment.
  • Proactively managing performance, conduct, and attendance, implementing improvement plans where necessary.
  • Building a strong team culture that promotes consistency and best practice across local, national, and agency-wide work.
  • Collaborating across Agency and Policy functions to influence tactical and strategic decision-making.
  • Working with Resilience and Technical Advisors to:
    • Maintain technical quality standards
    • Address skill gaps or development needs
  • Using management information to:
    • Monitor outputs
    • Identify risks
    • Take ownership of resolving issues
  • Contributing to agency-wide change initiatives and supporting the implementation of customer- or policy-driven changes.
  • Championing high health and safety standards and supporting staff in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Note: The role requires managing a geographically dispersed team, which may involve travel to multiple sites.

  • Ability to adapt to changing directions and deliver difficult messages with:

Licence Requirement

  • A valid UK driving licence and access to a vehicle with appropriate business use insurance.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Salary: £34,765
  • Pension Contribution: APHA contributes £10,071 towards membership of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme
