Technical Underwriter – Care
Location: Leeds, Manchester, or Birmingham (Hybrid: 3 days office, 2 days home)

About the Role
This newly created ** Technical Underwriter – Care** role supports the Head of Care, overseeing 1/3 of Markel UK’s business portfolio. The position combines:
- Senior technical expertise
- Portfolio oversight
- Underwriting leadership
- Clear progression path into future product leadership roles

Why This Role is Different
This is not a traditional underwriting position centred solely on referrals and quotes. Instead, you’ll act as a key technical authority, influencing:
- Strategic underwriting decisions and referral support
- Portfolio performance and profitability optimisation
- Underwriting improvements through challenges and efficiencies
- Technical governance and trading strategy alignment
- Team coaching across Underwriting, Claims, and Actuarial functions
- Cross-functional collaboration with senior stakeholders
You’ll deliver visible, high-impact results while learning directly from experienced product leaders.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Underwriting & Referral Authority
- Review and support high-complexity, high-value referrals
- Act as the senior technical point of contact for Care portfolio decisions
- Provide expert guidance and decision-making support
- Oversee delegated authority and underwriting governance

Portfolio Management & Performance
- Monitor and optimise overall portfolio performance
- Analyse trends to identify growth opportunities
- Contribute to strategic underwriting decisions
- Drive portfolio enhancements and product innovation
Stakeholder Engagement & Leadership
- Build strong cross-functional relationships, from underwriters to external partners
- Coach underwriting teams in technical excellence
- Champion efforts to improve outcomes and reduce complexity
- Advocate for process efficiency and disciplined underwriting
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Challenge and enhance existing processes
- Identify opportunities for automation and efficiency gains
- Support the evolution of Markel’s Care proposition
Requirements
Essential
- Significant commercial underwriting experience
- Proven technical underwriting capability
- Experience handling complex referrals and high-value risks
- Knowledge of commercial liability & property insurance
- Excellent stakeholder management & communication
- Strong analytical & problem-solving skills
- Ability to influence decisively and challenge constructively
- Desire to drive portfolio improvements
Highly Desirable
- Care sector underwriting experience
- Experience in commercial combined business
- Portfolio management involvement
- Delegated authority business familiarity
- CII qualifications (or commitment to professional development)
