Location: Leeds, Manchester, or Birmingham Contract: Hybrid (3 days office / 2 days home)
About the Role
Shape the future of one of the UK's largest specialist Care portfolios—not as just another underwriter, but as a trusted technical leader.
At Markel, we seek someone who wants to influence portfolio performance, challenge traditional thinking, and guide underwriting strategy. This newly created role demands senior technical expertise, portfolio oversight, and leadership to support our £1bn+ Care portfolios—which account for approximately one-third of our UK business.

Why This Role Is Different
This is not a traditional underwriting position focused solely on processing referrals and quotes. Instead, you’ll become a key technical authority within the Care portfolio, playing a pivotal role in:
- Supporting the highest-level underwriting referrals and technical decisions
- Influencing portfolio profitability & growth
- Driving underwriting improvements & efficiencies
- Overseeing underwriting governance and trading strategy
- Coaching underwriting teams across the business
- Challenging conventional processes to shape better solutions
- Collaborating closely with senior stakeholders in Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial, and Distribution
Most importantly, you’ll leave a visible impact on a strategically crucial portfolio, while learning directly from top industry leaders.
What You’ll Do
Working closely with the Head of Care and the wider underwriting leadership team, your responsibilities will include:
Technical Underwriting & Referral Authority
- Review and support complex and high-value underwriting referrals
- Act as the senior technical authority for the Care portfolio
- Provide expert underwriting guidance and strategic decision support
- Support delegated authority and underwriting governance

Portfolio Management & Performance
- Help monitor and optimise portfolio performance
- Analyse trends and identify growth opportunities
- Contribute to strategic underwriting decisions
- Support portfolio development and product enhancement initiatives
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships across underwriting and business functions
- Coach underwriters on technical best practices
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to improve outcomes
- Act as an ambassador for technical excellence
Continuous Improvement
- Challenge existing processes to drive efficiency
- Support innovation and streamlined underwriting
- Help reduce complexity without compromising underwriting standards
- Contribute to refining our Care proposition
Requirements
Essential
- Significant commercial underwriting experience
- Strong technical underwriting expertise
- Experience handling complex referrals & large-risk assessments
- Knowledge of commercial liability and/or property insurance
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
- Strong analytical & problem-solving abilities
- Confidence to constructively challenge & influence stakeholders
- A passion for driving improvement & making a meaningful impact
Highly Desirable
- Care portfolio underwriting experience
- Experience in commercial combined Specialty business
- Exposure to portfolio management & strategic risk oversight
- Handling delegated authority business models
- CII qualifications (or a strong commitment to professional development)
