About The Role
You’ll help keep our nation moving daily.
As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in teams, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway safe, efficient, and running smoothly for passengers and freight.
Our technician community spans diverse backgrounds—this could be your first step into rail! We focus on transferable skills and behaviours, offering full training to ensure safe and competent teamwork.

Your Experience And Skills
Technicians link team leaders with operatives, ensuring seamless operations across disciplines. For this role, you’ll specialise in track maintenance:
- You’ll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as Permanent Way).
- Manual work involves handling rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures supporting trains.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Carry out work safely and align with safe systems of work, method statements, or relevant instructions.
- Perform trained and competent tasks.
- Lead work activities safely, efficiently while adhering to all standards.
- Control and confirm that assets meet compliance standards.
- Establish and maintain safety arrangements for staff, contractors, and equipment.
- Ensure all team members hold valid competencies.
- Verify that vehicles, tools, and materials are fit for use, stored/disposed of correctly.
- Report work completed/not completed and maintain accurate records.
- Foster personal and team development.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures.

Essential Criteria
- Experience in arranging and implementing safe systems of work.
- Organisational and control skills for safe and efficient work delivery.
- Ability to demonstrate, promote, and embed safe working behaviours within teams.
- Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team effectively.
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Knowledge of permanent way inspection, fault diagnosis, maintenance, and renewal techniques.
- Familiarity with standards, procedures, and instructions.
- Holding mantained competencies for this role, as determined by business needs.
- Ideally, NVQ Level 1/2 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject—experience can substitute formal qualifications.
- Willingness/drive ability for routes required by the business (modes of transport not specified).
