Job Title: Technician
Location: Cramlington Salary: Up to £25,000
About the Role

Advanced Engineering Solutions (AES) is part of the South Staffordshire Group—a 3,000-strong organisation behind South Staffs Water, Cambridge Water, and several leading utility support businesses. The role offers long-term development and career progression.
Role Overview
This position supports the delivery of specialist on-site and workshop engineering services for water and gas utility clients. The Site–Workshop Technician will:
- Contribute to the maintenance, inspection, and repair of assets such as pipelines, pumping stations, and gas pressure systems
- Ensure work is conducted safely, efficiently, and to high technical standards
Responsibilities
- Assist in the extraction, inspection, and reinstallation of large mechanical and electrical equipment on gas and water utility sites
- Support the inspection of water pipelines, including operating AES’s patented inspection tools in excavations and confined spaces
- Conduct ancillary site activities, including:
- Installation and monitoring of water flow equipment
- Grit blasting and painting of components
- Sampling of pipelines and soils for structural analysis
- Operate in accordance with site permits and AES safety protocols, ensuring compliance with client and statutory health and safety requirements
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to inspection and maintenance reports
- Manage and maintain tools, equipment, and vehicles in an efficient and clean state
- Promote a positive safety culture and contribute to continual improvement in operational practices

Requirements
Essential Criteria
To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate:
- Good mechanical aptitude and experience using hand tools and equipment
- A positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new skills
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
- Flexibility to travel, including staying away from home (up to four nights per week, particularly in summer)
- Physically fitness to comfortably work outdoors, at height, and in confined spaces
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills to complete documentation and reports accurately
- A commitment to maintaining high safety standards at all times
- A full UK driving licence
Desirable (Training Provided if Needed)
Experience or certification in:
- Engineering, utilities, or mechanical maintenance environments
- SHEA Gas or SHEA Water card (training may be provided)
- Confined Spaces and Working at Height training (training may be provided)
- Forklift or abrasive wheels certification (training may be provided)
