Job Description
The Role
As the Environment Manager, you will lead the design, construction, and ongoing operation of Primark’s physical and virtual Point of Sale (PoS) test lab environments.
This critical role spans global PoS instances, with a physical lab base in the UK and a demonstration till in Ireland. Responsible for driving the testing agility for retail technology, you will ensure lab environments are:
- Representative of real-world store environments
- Reliable to support product and engineering teams
- Always operational to accelerate new capabilities
You will work with a wide range of stakeholders, including:
- Engineering managers
- Portfolio Delivery Leads
- Product Managers & Product Owners
to deliver on-demand test environments while maintaining compliance with release cycles and audit processes.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Roadmap
- Own and champion the strategic vision for PoS lab environments, ensuring alignment with current and future global store technology requirements.
- Diagram and execute the transformation of PoS testing capabilities, with a focus on:
- Virtualisation
- Cloud integration
- Environment-as-a-Service (EaaS) architectures
- Goal: Increase speed, scalability, and self-service availability for testing teams.

Operations & Execution
- Oversee end-to-end lab operations across the UK & Ireland, ensuring:
- 24/7 high availability of production-like environments
- Seamless coordination with development, QA, and release teams
- Effective scheduling, prioritisation, and support delivery.
People Leadership
- Lead and develop the PoS Lab Engineer, providing:
- Technical mentorship
- Career progression support
- Ongoing upskilling in cutting-edge PoS technologies.
Operational Excellence
- Champion automation, governance, and standardisation, improving:
- Security and compliance of test environments
- Operational efficiency through lean processes
- Cost optimisation while maintaining reliability.
- Drift away from ‘tactical firefighting’ towards data-driven decision-making, using:
- Utilisation metrics
- Performance analytics
- ROI-focused continuous improvement.
Innovation & Commercial Delivery
- Continuously introduce new PoS technologies to enhance lab capabilities.
- Align lab initiatives with real-world business outcomes, translating technical challenges into scalable, commercial-value solutions.
Requirements
Knowledge & Experience
Required:
- 5+ years’ experience managing complex, production-grade technology ecosystems, ideally within retail, store POS, or similar verticals.
- Deep operational expertise in:
- PoS architecture (hardware & software)
- Store tech environments (multi-country/multi-market scenarios)
- Hands-on practical experience with:
- Virtualisation platforms (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V)
- Cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, etc.)
- Environment-as-a-Service (EaaS) approaches to testing.
- Strong analytical mindset, with a focus on:
- Process improvement
- Automation: scripts & orchestration
- Cost-benefit optimisation.

Leadership & Collaboration
- Demonstrated people leadership (e.g.- mentoring, stakeholder alignment) or a willingness to evolve into a mid-/senior-level management role.
- Proven ability to manage conflicting priorities, juggling Dev, QA, and ops dependencies under tight deadlines.
- Collabrative style with a proactive problem-solving approach, with a knack for translating technical debt into tangible business wins.
- Creativity and initiative: Drive advocacy for best practices while advocating for next-generation testing environments.
