Job Description
Job Title: Temporary – Seasonal Laborer (Fire Department)
2026 Wage: $14.25 per hour
Job Summary
This position performs hydrant flows, maintenance work, light equipment operations and a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks such as painting and mowing related Fire Department properties.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Responsible for and able to operate and maintain light to medium equipment in the maintenance, painting, flowing of fire hydrants and other Fire Department equipment and properties.
- Motility to scrape, paint, remove debris around fire hydrants within the city of Aberdeen.
- Able to safely operate all assigned and related equipment necessary in the day-to-day maintenance of Fire Department equipment and properties.
- Responsible for lawn care, mowing, trimming, weed-eating, spraying, planting and general beautification on Fire Department properties.
- Perform station duties such as cleaning, vacuuming, shampooing carpets, and painting.
- Responsible for operating various power and hand tools or equipment.
- Responsible for maintaining, cleaning and repair all equipment and tools.
- Ability and stamina to perform semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor in picking up litter, routine cleaning and repair, loading and unloading materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Required By The Position
- Knowledge of general construction and or maintenance work.
- Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Ability to work directly with the public and co-workers tactfully and safely.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Battalion Chief assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include department standard operating procedures, city ordinances and policies. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this position is to perform hydrant flows, maintenance work, light equipment operations and a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks such as painting and mowing related Fire Department properties.
The work consists of heavy manual labor and inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and representatives of other fire departments, and the general public.
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and educate the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
