Job Description

Costain have won extensive work across the water sector this year to support the AMP 8 investment cycle. We have been appointed by United Utilities as one of 7 partners to deliver £3bn of projects in the Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8) between 2025 – 2030. The project to construct a new membrane bioreactor to treat combined primary treated flows from Wigan and Skelmersdale WwTW’s to meet EA regulatory output dates in March 2030.

The role will be site based.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Temporary Works Manager, this role is to manage temporary works inspections.

The management of temporary works is a crucial function of Costain’s operations, and its successful delivery is critical to health and safety at site and, therefore, the future of the business.It is essential that the temporary works inspector is suitably qualified and has the relevant experience appropriate to the complexity of the contract.

The role will be required from Sep 2026 throughout the construction phase until end of 2028.

  • Early identification of hazards/omissions with respect to the temporary structures on the Wigan Project.
  • Prepare permits to load, working with the site engineering team and sign off permits, post inspection
  • Inspect and sign off all elements of temporary works across the site
  • Liaise with temporary works manager & co-ordinator to ensure permit to load in place for lifting activities
  • Undertake CTRM (Contract Targeted Risk Monitoring) inspections of the site, specifically relating to temporary works on a regular basis to ensure all temporary works being undertaken in line with the designs
  • Review supply chain designs
  • Mentor less experienced TWC’s and TWS’s in the Engineering team
  • Ensure routine weekly inspections of temporary works are completed and recorded.
  • Review RAMS that include temporary works and discuss your recommendations with the Site Team.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • 10+ years civil engineering
  • Competent in reinforced concrete inc. rebar stability and shuttering up to 10m high inspections
  • Piling & crane platforms
  • Pipe pressure testing
  • Excavation inspection

Desirable

  • Scaffolding

Qualifications

Essential

  • CITB Temporary Works Co-ordinator
  • SMSTS

Desirable

  • CISRS Basic Scaffold Inspection
