Shift Controller Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Shift controller managing process operations, permit-to-work, and general plant interactions
  • Leading toolbox talks and pre-start safety discussions
  • Holding others accountable for their standard of work on-site

Core Duties

  • Manage the day-to-day terminal operations in a safe and controlled manner
  • Prioritise planned tasks, contractors, and unplanned activities effectively
  • Collaborate with different organisational areas to optimise fuel movements and contractor tasks
  • Oversee stock movements and conduct regular reconciliations while communicating product availability
  • Engage fully with the site’s personal safety system, driving and leading targeted safety discussions
  • Report incidents in accordance with company guidance and thresholds, in a timely and proportionate manner
  • Remain calm and controlled under pressure in emergency response scenarios

About You: Essential Requirements

  • A minimum one year’s experience in equivalent roles or relevant industry experience
  • Capable of working a day and night shift pattern, as part of a 24/7, 365-day shift team
  • Flexibility to accommodate shift cover during periods of holiday, sickness, or temporary low staffing levels
  • Confident in delegating lower value tasks to supporting team members
  • Good knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and practices
  • Excellent communication skills, essential for working with people from various cultural and social backgrounds
  • Comfortable working both alone and in a team environment
  • Understanding the role includes a mixture of control room and field-based tasks

Preferred Qualifications / Experience

  • English and Mathematics GCSE (grade C or above)
  • GQA, NVQ, or equivalent in:
    • Warehouse and Storage
    • Bulk Liquid Operations (beneficial but not essential)
  • Electrical or Mechanical qualifications (beneficial but not essential)
  • Experience with DCS, SCADA, or HMI systems
  • Proficient with basic Microsoft desktop applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
