Terrestrial Restoration Manager

Location: On-site – Kilchoan Estate, Oban Salary: £34,000 - £39,000 (depending on experience)


The Kilchoan Estate, a cultural, educational, and sustainable conservation enterprise spanning 1500 acres, specialises in habitat restoration, preservation, and sustainable land management. From grasslands and peatlands to ancient woodland, exotic plantations, and marine projects (including native oyster restoration and kelp farming), we are seeking an enthusiastic and driven candidate to oversee terrestrial restoration and conservation initiatives.

About the Role

The Terrestrial Restoration Manager will lead woodland creation projects, conservation efforts, compliance management, and team collaboration across the estate. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organisational skills, technical expertise in land management, and effective communication to manage staff, contractors, and stakeholders while supporting public engagement and operational improvements.


Key Responsibilities

  • Woodland Management & Compliance
    • Oversee woodland creation projects and maintenance of existing forests, including regular fence inspections, repairs, and contractor collaboration.
    • Ensure compliance with the Woodland Carbon Code and all relevant Health and Safety regulations.

  • Natural Habitat Restoration

    • Lead active conservation practices, including gorse removal, bracken bashing, and other habitat enhancement activities.
    • Manage communications and deliverables with the estate team and Managing Director through regular written reports.
  • Budget & Contractor Oversight

    • Effectively manage budgets, including vetting and overseeing expenses for external contractors.
  • Conservation Grazing & Farm Management

    • Work closely with the stockperson to coordinate conservation grazing of highland cattle across the estate.
  • Stakeholder & Public Engagement

    • Collaborate with the Biodiversity and Engagement Officer to:
      • Foster partnerships with like-minded organisations.
      • Support visiting students, volunteers, seasonal workers, and interns.
      • Develop new biodiversity-oriented approaches for maximising habitat benefits.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in developing and delivering nature reserve work programmes.
  • Experience in managing, mentoring, and supporting teams to achieve operational objectives (volunteers/staff).
  • Technical proficiency in QGIS for mapping, Microsoft Excel for data analysis, and report writing.
  • Strong knowledge of wildlife conservation principles, plant/tree identification, and practical land management.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal/external stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Highly self-motivated, with strong prioritisation and independence skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for clear, accurate reporting.
  • Commitment to Health and Safety at Work Act standards and risk mitigation.
  • Valid UK full licence and right to live and work in the UK.
