Chief Mechanical/Physical Test Engineer

Hours & Working Pattern
- 37.5 hours per week
- Full-time, days, on-site (5 days per week)

A-SAFE designs and manufactures world-leading physical safety barriers and protection systems, used in warehouses, factories, airports, and logistics centres worldwide. Your work here directly contributes to safe, reliable products that safeguard people, assets, and workplaces daily.
This isn’t a software, electronics, or desk-based testing role—it’s hands-on, rigorous, and full of real-world action. You’ll get involved in: ✔ Preparing/setting up equipment and test rigs ✔ Conducting physical product testing in our bespoke, state-of-the-art facility ✔ Analysing results and refining methods to ensure safe, accurate, and meaningful outcomes
Key Responsibilities
Core Tasks
- Work on-site in our test facility, preparing test areas, rigs, and equipment for physical product testing.
- Maintain strong process discipline in:
- Test documentation & data logging
- Equipment usage
- Health & safety compliance
- Produce clear, accurate technical reports for internal stakeholders and project teams.
Team Leadership & Improvement
- Support, coach, and supervise technicians, fostering a positive, accountable, high-performing team.
- Collaborate with R&D, New Product Development, and Operations teams to align testing with project requirements/timelines.
- Proactively identify bottlenecks, risks, and constraints, escalating issues before they impact delivery.

Innovation & Continuous Growth
- Influence future test capability by adopting new technology and processes.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, refining workflows and increasing test efficiency.
- Maintain/improve test equipment, facilities, and infrastructure for compliance and reliability.
- Help manage schedules, resources, and workflows across the Test by Design department.
Who We’re Looking For
Essential Criteria
- Proven experience as a Test Engineer in:
- Physical product testing
- Validation/Verification (V&V)
- Test lab environments
- Deep knowledge of:
- Health & safety standards
- Quality systems (e.g., ISO frameworks)
- Mechanical aptitude: Ability to assemble, secure, and test physical products safely.
- Experience with data handling, documentation control, and compliance.
- Proven ability to support/lead engineers/technicians with a collaborative leadership style.
- Strong organisational skills to balance multitasking and shifting priorities.
- Experience in:
- Test planning & scheduling
- Resource coordination
Must-Have Soft Skills
✅ Proactive, hands-on mindset – Excels in practical testing environments. ✅ Technical tool & equipment proficiency:
- Hand/powered tools
- Gauges (temperature, humidity, etc.) ✅ Microsoft Office experience (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook). ✅ Problem-solving ability – Driven to improve processes. ✅ Clear communication – Works effectively across teams. ✅ Risk management mindset – Confident in highlighting risks and suggesting improvements. ✅ Adaptability – Thrives in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Desirable (Bonus) Qualities
⚫ Degree in engineering (mechanical or related field), or equivalent practical engineering/testing experience. ⚫ Knowledge of industrial safety barrier standards (e.g., PAS 13, UNI, ANSI MH31.2). ⚫ Experience testing safety barrier systems or polymer-based products. ⚫ Familiarity with specialist test equipment:
- High-speed cameras
- Advanced measurement systems
- Specialist lighting setups ⚫ Contribution to lean/continuous improvement initiatives. ⚫ Forklift experience.
