About the Role

The Test Lead is responsible for interpreting testing needs, designing and executing appropriate tests, and ensuring that solutions meet quality standards and business requirements. This role focuses on mitigating risk, validating outcomes, and continuously improving testing practices to enhance reliability and stakeholder confidence. A significant part of the role involves collaborating early with BAs and developers to refine working processes before testing phases commence.


Key Responsibilities

1. Designing and Executing Tests

  • Set up suitable test environments, providing guidance where necessary.
  • Select appropriate test types and techniques, with necessary support.
  • Design, build, maintain, and execute, tests aligned to user needs and requirements.
  • Conduct exploratory testing to uncover hidden issues.
  • Research and trial new test types and techniques.

2. Managing, Reporting, and Resolving Defects

  • Collaborate to establish a defect management process for reporting and resolution.
  • Assess dependencies, defects, and risks critically, with support as needed.
  • Contribute to mitigation and contingency planning.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations and communicate effectively during defect resolution.
  • Clearly communicate risks and defect impacts to stakeholders.

3. Test Analysis

  • Work with stakeholders to identify functional and non-functional quality characteristics that add value.
  • Determine test scope, following agreed approaches.
  • Advocate for test needs (e.g., data, access, environments).
  • Ensure test needs (data, access, environments) are implemented early in delivery.
  • Apply multiple techniques to analyse complex information and identify risks.

4. Test and Quality Planning

  • Create or adapt testing approaches based on identified risks.
  • Follow and contribute to the development of a quality testing strategy.
  • Support continuous improvement of testing approaches, plans, and strategies.

5. Test Engineering

  • Explain the importance of testing processes, environments, and tools in delivering quality outcomes.
  • Apply test engineering practices and standards, with support as required.
  • Support the maintenance and improvement of automated tests and tools needed for testing.
  • Provide technical knowledge for non-functional items such as performance and scalability (e.g., Playwright expertise).

Requirements

  • Proficiency in defining non-functional requirements like performance and scalability.
  • Familiarity with Playwright and the need to use technical expertise in testing environments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with business analysts (BAs) and developers to improve testing practices pre-definition.
