Senior Test Engineer – GCAP, Future Combat Air

Salary Range: £45,000 – £60,000

Leonardo UK operates a grade-based salary framework with approved broad bands. The displayed salary reflects standard market benchmarks, subject to governance and internal equity processes.


Your Impact

Join a once-in-a-generation Defence programme defining National and International Combat Air capability in the UK, including the Tempest 6th Generation fighter aircraft—scheduled for Royal Air Force service by 2035. As a Test Engineer in the Test Environments team of GCAP, you’ll:

  • Play a critical role in pioneering future test capabilities
  • Collaborate on physical, digital, and real-world integrated testing
  • Support international partnerships (UK, Italy, Japan)

Hybrid working will be possible, though onsite collaboration is essential. Enhanced Security Requirements apply—see details below.


What You’ll Do

  • Deliver end-to-end Test Solutions across multiple contexts, including:
    • System Requirement Integration (SRI/LRI)
    • Bench- and full-system integration
    • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and simulation
  • Capture stakeholder requirements to inform the Test, Evaluation, and Acceptance Plans, defining schedules, dependencies, and constraints.
  • Act as Leonardo’s Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Test Engineering, influencing Test Strategy across:
    • International and UK stakeholders
    • Procurement, Future Factory, IT teams
  • Lead synthetic trials integration (development support and airborne trial exploitation).

What You’ll Bring

essentials

  • Industry experience in Simulation & Modelling (e.g., Simulink)
  • Degree—or equivalent practical experience—in Science, Engineering, Technology, or Maths

desired skills

  • Proven experience as a Test Engineer
  • Knowledge of Digital Twin Software
  • Systems engineering lifecycle/verification experience

Willingness to learn is key—inclusive of less conventional qualifications if balanced with transferable capabilities.
