Instructional Workshop Leader HM Prison Wandsworth – Industries Wandsworth, SW18 3HS
Job Overview
This is a non-operational instructional role based within a prison establishment. The postholder provides prisoners with skills, knowledge, and work experience to improve employment prospects on release and reduce reoffending. You will ensure services are delivered to a high standard while maintaining security and discipline. Training may include national qualifications supported by external organisations, such as colleges.
Note: This is not a basic assembly/packaging workshop role. Temporary supervision in basic workshops may be required short-term (covered under Production Instructor – Enterprises job descriptions).
Summary of Responsibilities
The primary function of the role centres on:
- Instructing prisoners in specialised workshop settings
- Assessing and developing skills aligned with national qualifications
- Managing operational discipline and regular reporting procedures
- Ensuring workshop productivity while adhering to contractual guidelines
Key Responsibilities & Duties
Recruitment & Induction Support
- Participate in prisoner selection for assigned workshop/working area.
- Induct and train prisoners in:
- Health & safety
- COSHH compliance
- Handling machinery/tools
Instruction & Supervision
- Deliver bespoke training aligned with individual prisoner needs.
- Schedule work tasks, set performance targets, and monitor delivery against standards.
- Assess prisoners’ skills to nationally recognised qualifications standards.
- Maintain discipline and motivation among prisoners, including performance appraisals.
Security & Risk Management
- Conduct metal detector screenings or rub down searches for prisoners.
- Supervise workshop security and ensure radio communication adheres to the Local Security Strategy (LSS).
Administration & Reporting
- Log itpartner/worker attendance, approving wages/hours. Track piece-rate work.
- Use key forms for incidents/reports:
- Record product quality assurance and inspect tools/machinery for faults.
- Write parole and rehab reports, updating training records.

Operational Excellence
- Carry out tool/facility checks, and planned maintenance on machinery.
- Monitor health & safety risk assessments in assigned specialist areas.
- Forecast material requirements to meet production targets.
- Lead product reviews to innovate work activities and enhance prisoner experience.
- Contribute to self-audit activities and achieving Service Delivery Indicators (SDIs).
Expected Flexibility
While your duties are outlined above, the role may evolve reasonably. Major changes must align with Job Evaluation Scheme adjustments, followed by discussions with the employer.

Essential Requirements

Industry Experience: Proven knowledge of a production environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a supervisor (where applicable).
- Ability to use industrial standard equipment and machinery.

Qualifications: Current or commitment to obtain a Level 3 or equivalent qualification in textiles-related subjects (or similar trade).
- Special Note: If transferring to work with young offenders, successful completion of an assessment will be required.

Key Skills & Literacy:
- Basic maths for time recording/targets.
- Accurate documentation, report-writing, and record-keeping.
- IT competency for administrative tasks.
Hours & Working Conditions
- 37-hour working week (standard working hours – unsocial allocation TBD).
