About the Fellowship

The Kay Mellor Fellowship is a year-long paid opportunity for an emerging writer based in Yorkshire and the Humber to develop their work for stage and screen.

This prestigious programme, hosted by Leeds Playhouse in partnership with Rollem Productions, BBC Writers and Leeds City Council, builds upon the legacy of Kay Mellor, a highly regarded figure in British theatre and television.

Overview & Opportunities

The successful candidate – the Kay Mellor Fellow – will spend 12 months working with the following partners:

Key Collaborations

  • Leeds Playhouse & Rollem Productions:
    • Collaborate to develop one new stage play and one television pitch.
    • Creative output may include:
      • A single adapted idea for both stage and screen
      • Two separate concepts, independently tailored for each medium.
    • Working hours and timelines will be flexible and negotiable, allowing scope for other commitments.

    • Participation in a full writer development programme, including:
      • Workshops and masterclasses

Salary & Contract

  • Remuneration: £10,000 annual fellowship bursary (paid in one instalment).
  • Note: Recipient must be self-employed and is responsible for any applicable tax liability.
