Theatre Director – Grand Opera House York
Position Reported To: Business Manager – Seed Venues
You will serve as the senior leader of the Grand Opera House York, working in tandem with wider ATG central teams—including Finance Business Partners, Programming, Risk, Marketing, and Hospitality.
During the venue’s 125th-anniversary year, you’ll drive an exceptional programme featuring West End Musicals, Plays, Comedy, Dance, Music, Local Events, and the annual Pantomime—while ensuring the venue remains a vibrant cornerstone of York’s community. In this role, you’ll prioritise performance, profitability, and customer service, positioning the Grand Opera House as a premier destination in the region.
Note: Your role may involve work with children or vulnerable people.
Key Responsibilities
Business Strategy & Growth
- Oversee the overall performance of the venue, balancing priorities across customers, shareholders, employees, reputation, innovation, entrepreneurship, and development.
- Proactively identify and foster new income streams (e.g., sponsorships) aligned with business objectives and growth visions.
- Collaborate with the Business Manager and Finance Partner to develop and execute the venue’s Business Plan, ensuring delivery of EBITDA targets set by the Board.
- Set, track, and review venue management team goals, performing routine audits and addressing performance gaps.
- Participate in the programming process, engaging with the Programming Director to refine the artistic schedule, advocate for its success, and explore new opportunities for long-term development.
Team & Culture Leadership
- Foster a positive workplace culture, prioritising individual growth, open dialogue, and creative problem-solving to drive both staff and venue performance.
- Ensure high-quality service delivery to internal/external stakeholders, including customers, producers, and ATG partners.
- Cultivate teamwork and accountability, regularly reviewing progress against targets and addressing performance issues constructively.
- Represent the Grand Opera House and ATG across external engagements, maintaining the venue’s reputation as a market leader.

- Support and expand the venue’s community engagement, leveraging local partnerships to deepen its impact.
- Champion legislative compliance, including people standards, health & safety, and regulatory adherence.
- Contribute to outreach and training programmes, including mentoring students, trainees, and supporting Creative Learning initiatives.
- Commit to an inclusive and well-being-focused culture, alongside initiatives to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable operations.
Essential Qualities & Experience
Candidates meeting most of these criteria are strongly encouraged to apply. Transferable skills from other sectors are welcome.
- Substantial leadership experience at a level comparable to a Head of Department, or comparable seniority in smaller organisations.
- A track record of leading and motivating diverse teams to deliver aligned performance, fostering unity and shared purpose.
- A results-driven, customer-centric approach, able to prioritise and adjust to high-stakes environments while ensuring excellent service quality.
- Ability to initiate positive change, collaboratively steer teams, and manage both internal and external relationships at all levels.
- Proven expertise in coaching and developing others, including performance management and training.
- Strong budget/business acumen, with problem-solving and initiative-skills – blended with high organisational adaptability.
- ABILITY TO ** plan across diverse demands**, meet deadlines, and flex to seize opportunities.
- Excellent IT skills, able to quickly adapt to new systems.

Desirable
- Specialised knowledge of ticketing/box office systems or retail operations.
- Relevant management qualifications or health & safety certifications.
- A proven passion for (or experience in) the live entertainment sector, though exhaustive industry experience is not mandatory.
- Availability or potential to obtain a Personal License holder status (arrangements via ATG upon joining).
