Theatre Practitioner
Location: Woodlands Hospital, Darlington
Hours & Tenure: 37.5 hours per week, Permanent, flexible shift pattern
Salary: Up to £39,500.00 per year (based on experience, training, and qualifications)
About the Role
Woodlands Hospital, part of Circle Health Group (Britain’s leading independent healthcare provider), is seeking a dedicated Theatre Practitioner to join their skilled team.
This position offers a full-time opportunity within a high-performing environment, focusing on surgical support, patient safety, and theatre operations.
Key Responsibilities:

Pre-operative support:
- Assist the surgical team by preparing instruments, instruments, and linens
- Maintain sterility standards and ensure equipment safety
- Anticipate surgeon needs and prepare tools/medications accordingly

Anaesthetic coordination:
- Support the Anaesthetist with equipment readiness, patient monitoring, airway management, and positioning
- Contribute to securing pre-operative holds and confirming patient readiness

Intra-operative support:
- Set up operating theatres tailored to surgery type and patient needs
- Validate all surgical/anaesthetic equipment pre-use and report faults immediately
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve efficient, safe surgical lists

Post-operative care:
- Monitor vital signs, manage pain/nausea, and facilitate recovery
- Ensure patients are prompting for discharge and conflict-resolution focused patient transitions

Safety & compliance:
- Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control policies
- Promote a positive theatre culture emphasising respect, efficiency, and teamwork
Essential Requirements
- Registered Nurse (with NMC registration) or qualified Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC registered)
- Hands-on experience/training in:
- Scrub roles
- Anaesthetic support
- Recovery processes
- Sound knowledge of:
- Infection control protocols
- Manual handling practices
- Patient safety frameworks
- Ability to thrive in high-pressure environments:
- Quick decision-making skills
- Adaptability in dynamic scenarios
- Clear communication under pressure
- Strong interpersonal skills and dedication to safe surgical practice
