Main tasks and responsibilities of this position:
- To manage the day to day case workload allocated within the theatre area.
- To support the consultant Anaesthetist in the delivery of safe anaesthesia.
- Responsible and accountable in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care within Theatre & Recovery.
- Provide excellent clinical leadership and management skills to ensure the effective delivery of patient care and resources.
- Support the theatre Manager in leading and organising the nursing team.
- To be responsible for the updating and maintenance of all quality documents.
Important single tasks:
- Take responsibility in the management and provision of all aspects of patient care.
- Ensure preoperative checks are made on accepting the patient into the department and prior to the administration of any anaesthetic or surgical procedure.
- Prepare the patient psychologically, by appropriate communication and physically by placement of monitoring devices, position and assisting with intravenous cannulation for the planned procedure.
- Ensuring that policies and procedures are adhered to in relation to safeguards against wrong operations and correct procedures are followed in the checking of swabs, instruments, needles etc, and reporting any such discrepancy to the Anaesthetist / Surgeon / Clinic Manager.
- Respond to, record and report any adverse events or incidents relating to the intervention/treatment with an appropriate degree of urgency.
- To ensure that correct aseptic techniques are used at all times.
- To ensure the patient is positioned safely and correctly.
- Act in accordance with the NMC Professional Code of Conduct.
- To administer medicines in accordance with NMC guidelines, Policies and Procedures.
- To deliver high quality patient care which is clinically effective, evidence based and appropriate.
- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care as part of a collaborative programme of patient care.
- To participate in integrated governance and risk assessment and reporting as required.
- To undertake delegated responsibility for senior staff during periods of absence.
- Maintain sterile stores efficiently and effectively.
- Organise and prioritise own workload to ensure provision of a quality service.
- Keep accurate and complete records consistent with regulations, policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate an organised, effective and timely approach to all tasks.
- Recognise when colleagues need assistance and offer practical support.
- Work in a way that minimises risks to the health, safety and security of self and others.
- Prepare appropriately for the care/intervention/treatment to be undertaken including the risks to be managed.
- Manage the Recovery area to ensure safe and effective recovery to preoperative conscious level.
- Ensure all patients meet criteria set before discharge from the recovery area.
- Give post-operative advice to patients to ensure continued safe recovery when discharged.
- Take appropriate action to manage an emergency summoning assistance immediately when this is necessary.
- Ensure resuscitation training is maintained and updated.
- Ensure all emergency equipment is checked and maintained.
- Accurately test equipment and identify any deviations from required performance standards, together with their likely causes.
- Determine and implement appropriate remedial action to deal with performance problems take the appropriate action if a fault cannot be resolved.
- Correctly and safely install and integrate equipment components.
- Carry out activities in a way which complies with any relevant service agreements/maintenance contracts and is consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
- Clean and restore equipment and work areas, leaving them in a suitable condition for future use.

General Duties
- To ensure that all information concerning patients is treated in the strictest confidence.

- To read and sign all Policies in accordance with the Care Standards Act 2002.
Special Authorities
You have access to all facilities within the Herts and Essex Fertility Centre with particular responsibility to the Theatre and Recovery areas.
Education / Special knowledge:
Good knowledge of computer-systems, SAGE Line 50 and Microsoft office. Good leadership and communication skills.
Health & safety:
All employees must be aware of the responsibility placed on them under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), to ensure that the agreed safety procedures are carried out to maintain a safe environment for employees and visitors. Individual employees should also refer to specific health and safety requirements within their own job descriptions.

The post holder must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients’ staff and Centre business in accordance with the data Protection Act 1998.
