Job Overview

We have an exciting Band 5 Staff Nurse- Scrub opportunity which has become available within our North West Operating department Moorfields Eye Hospital at our network sites covering Ealing, Potters Bar and North Wick Park.

The successful candidates will need to have excellent communication skills, be highly motivated, demonstrate good leadership, and be committed to the delivery of high-quality care within all areas of the ophthalmic theatre.

The successful candidates will hold the appropriate qualifications to be a currently registered practitioner (RGN/ODP) and demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development.

We are committed to ongoing professional development and opportunities exist to undertake a wide range of in-house and external courses. Rotational opportunities throughout the other ophthalmic departments that make up Moorfields can be accommodated upon request.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning, and provision of specialist ophthalmic nursing advice and carries out specialist nursing procedures in scrub as well as providing care and support in the clinical setting as part of the perioperative pathway.

Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge.

Perform scrubbing duties of different ophthalmic procedures.

Main Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
  • To act as advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient orientated approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
  • Participate in key developments relating to the ophthalmic specialty so that high quality patient focused services are promoted.
  • To help ensure that the learning environment and specialist training is provided for the benefit of all staff and that evidence-based practice is incorporated and utilized in the teaching environment.
  • To ensure mandatory training is kept up to date
  • To work with the Practice Development Team in the development and implementing of evidence-based practice.
  • Be a role model and demonstrate specialist knowledge and high standards of clinical practice and provide support or advice when necessary.
  • Actively participate in audit taking, presenting and sharing of audit outcomes.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Nurse Part 1 of the NMC Register

Desirable criteria

  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Possession of Diploma or evidence of currently working towards one

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Recent relevant clinical experience in theatres

Desirable criteria

  • Ophthalmic scrub experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Computer skills – Patient Administration System (PAS), Open Eyes, ICAMS, E procurement, Electronic Reporting System General Health and Safety
  • Understanding and knowledge of Peri-operative setting/patient journey

Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge/understanding of Ophthalmic Peri-operative knowledge

Skills/Abilities/Personal Qualities

Essential criteria

  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to take responsibilities under the overall supervision of the nurse in charge or medical colleagues for assigned tasks
  • Ability to organise own workload
  • Demonstrates the ability to support other staff
