I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

It is vital that candidates have an understanding of working under pressure with high volume, low complexity patients. A key requirement is the ability to be flexible and work within all specialties: scrub, anaesthetic, recovery, circulating, and escort practitioners.
- Scrub practitioners are essential to the operating team working alongside anaesthetists, surgeons, and healthcare support workers. They support the surgeon and ensure the availability and sterility of equipment, ensuring it is accounted for.
- Anaesthetic practitioners ensure that patient anaesthesia is as safe and effective as possible.
- The recovery practitioner will prepare equipment and drugs to care for patients safely after an operation, monitor their condition, and provide appropriate treatment until they have recovered, including managing pain, discomfort or complications.
- The circulating practitioner is vital to the surgical team, providing a link between the theatre and the rest of the hub.
- Escort practitioners provide essential support and care when taking patients to theatre.
It is important to maintain awareness of national and regional initiatives aligned with the running of surgical hubs and patient experience.
