Job Description

Salary: £39,959 – £48,117 per annum (NHS Band 6)

Working hours: 37.5 hours (Full-Time)

Contract type: Permanent

As a Band 6 Therapeutic Radiographer at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, you will:

  • Deliver radiotherapy treatment and planning (on a rotational basis) using ionising radiation to treat patients with cancer or benign disease, with both curative and palliative intent.
  • Operate specialised high-energy radiation equipment in conjunction with radiotherapy IT systems and imaging systems.
  • Assist the Team Leader (or deputise) in managing the administrative and patient workload of a defined area, ensuring efficient and high-quality radiation treatment delivery.
  • Supervise and train staff within the department.
  • Make confident clinical decisions using complex technical data and professional judgment, adhering to local protocols.
  • Conduct daily clinical evaluations of patients before, during, and after treatment, assessing their fitness for treatment and ensuring safe radiation exposure.
  • Record treatment data accurately and maintain record-keeping as required.
  • Ensure compliance with quality assurance protocols, IR(ME)R 2017 regulations, and IRR17 for radiotherapy and pre-treatment equipment.
  • Perform routine quality assurance checks on departmental equipment and report faults in accordance with departmental procedures.

Qualifications

  • BSc Therapeutic Radiography or equivalent qualification
  • HCPC registration for working as a Therapeutic Radiographer
  • Post-graduate education (or commitment to higher education such as Level 7)

Experience

  • APropriate post-qualification experience across treatment and pre-treatment areas, using modern equipment
  • Desirable: Experience with orthovoltage and brachytherapy
  • Strong familiarity with varied radiotherapy treatment techniques
  • Preferred: Previous employment within the NHS as a Radiographer

  • Emotional intelligence to handle emotive or confrontational situations with effective conflict resolution
  • Resilience to manage unexpected interruptions and high-pressure situations
  • Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot clinical or technical issues relating to patient treatment and equipment setup
  • Self-awareness—knowing your own limitations and when to escalate or seek support
  • Leadership capability in teaching and supervising student radiographers
  • Understanding and adherence to an ISO9001:2015 quality system
  • Knowledge of the national cancer agenda and its impact on practice
  • Current awareness of radiotherapy advancements
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
