About the Role

MKM, the leading independent builders’ merchant in the UK since 1995, is seeking a passionate, energetic, and proven Hire Account Manager to join our expanding family of over 3,300 employees across 143 branches nationwide. This role will allow you to drive customer engagement, improve business performance, and create a culture of belonging at MKM.

Key Responsibilities

Your role will focus on ensuring the efficient operation of the Tool Hire business. You’ll build strong relationships with customers and staff to maximise sales opportunities, enhance customer satisfaction, and uphold MKM’s reputation as the merchant of choice in your region.

Sales & Customer Experience

  • Generate and service new customers while maintaining and expanding existing relationships.
  • Provide expert product knowledge and specialist advice in customer interactions.
  • Resolve complaints effectively to achieve high customer satisfaction.
  • Prepare and process customer orders safely and efficiently.
  • Load/unload equipment and de-escalate any technical issues or faults promptly.

Customer Relationship Management

  • Develop and sustain profitable, long-term customer partnerships.
  • Drive sales growth by anticipating local market needs and sharing insights with management.
  • Foster a positive company reputation through consistent overall accountability.

Operations & Financial Responsibilities

  • Manage daily sales operations, processing orders, updating records, and reporting accurately.
  • Handle cash and card payments, ensuring the till and card terminal functions correctly.
  • Monitor weekly/monthly sales and stock reporting diligently.
  • Maintain inventory by supervising stock-takes, verifying incoming deliveries against tickets, and abiding by stock-level guidelines.

Administration and Stock Control

  • Coordinate all Hire department reports, paying special attention to Health & Safety compliance.
  • Update maintenance records for hired tools.
  • Process sales payments according to company procedures.

Health & Safety

  • Uphold safety standards for self, colleagues, and customers, including adhering to MKM’s Tool Hire Health & Safety procedures.
  • Ensure all equipment conforms with regulatory requirements and maintain applicable certifications.
  • Promote a proactive H&S culture where risks are identified and mitigated effectively.

Requirements

Essential Skills & Experience

✔ Full clean driving licence is preferred. ✔ A relevant understanding of the tool hire market and product knowledge. ✔ Proven experience in sales or customer-focused roles. ✔ Exceptional customer service skills with demonstrable customer relationship management abilities. ✔ Strong teamwork mentality alongside the ability to work independently. ✔ Excellent organisational skills, particularly in managing stock and conducting inventory checks. ✔ A flexible, enthusiastic, and resilient attitude in a dynamic working environment. ✔ Res义 to alternate Saturday mornings as required.

Desirable Qualifications

🔹 GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English. 🔹 Basic IT literacy, including familiarisation with related software/hardware. 🔹 Working knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation.
