Tool Hire Driver / Fitter

Main Purpose

To optimise sales, service, and operational efficiency within Tool Hire, by building strong customer and staff relationships, ensuring maximum revenue and high customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Sales & Service

Cross-functional responsibilities to drive customer satisfaction and operational effectiveness:

  • Build, maintain, and resolve profitable customer relationships proactively (including handling complaints).
  • Prepare and process customer orders, end-to-end delivery logistics, and ensure safe loading/unloading of small plant, tools, and alloy stacks.
  • Provide technical support for equipment faults, damage, or repairs efficiently.
  • Accurately process sales orders and delivery schedules with high attention to detail.

Supporting Company Initiatives

Daily and strategic tasks to enhance company performance:

  • Represent MKM professionally, liaising with customers and managing daily travel between sites to improve experience.
  • Administration:
    • Generate and maintain all required Tool Hire reports, prioritising Health & Safety compliance.
    • Update vehicle checks (daily and weekly) per company protocols.
    • Handle cash payments and inventory updates (sales orders, maintenance logs).
    • Conduct regular stock tends alongside your supervisor against goods receipts.
  • Health & Safety:
    • Ensure the safety of yourself, colleagues, and customers.
    • Maintain up-to-date Tool Hire H&S knowledge.
    • Confirm that equipment meets all required standards.
    • Keep H&S certifications current.
  • Market Awareness:
    • Identify local market trends and communicate these to your manager.
    • Contribute ideas for sales growth strategies in your territory.
  • Service Excellence:
    • Provide exceptional customer service throughout the working day.
    • Maintain a fastidious attention to order accuracy and delivery performance.

Product Knowledge & Advice

  • Stay abreast with updated product knowledge and technical specifications.
  • Offer specialist advice to customers and deliver tailored product information.

Operational Tasks

  • Assist in the inventory management, ensuring all goods are checked securely against supplier invoices.
  • Lock-in and promote MKM’s appeal in your service territory.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Full and valid UK drivers’ license, including:
    • Category C1 (Class 2) HGV licence (MN 7.5t satisfactory).
    • Valid Date & Time (Digi Tachograph) card (covers driving exams).
  • Strong working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation relevant to Construction and the Tool Hire industry.
  • Clear understanding of local market dynamics and tool hire products.
  • Self-starter—balancing independent initiative with seamless teamwork.
  • Flexible approach, adaptable to varied tasks and high-energy environments.
  • Commitment to delivering outstanding customer service.
  • Abilities to build and retain quality relationships with stakeholders.
  • Sound organisational skills to track stock and recordkeeping.
  • Practical mechanical aptitude to support maintenance efforts.

Desirable

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths & English.
  • Prior sales/customer-focused experience in comparable roles.
  • Basic IT familiarity (including familiarity with CRM systems or dispatch software).
  • Previous HVGs HGV experience, though newly qualified drivers are also welcome.
  • Industry experience in Tool Hire development.
