Trading Desk Manager, Sterling Desk
Location: Leeds only
This is an exciting and impactful front-office role that offers direct insights into central banking, combining critical market operations with policymaking.
The Bank of England is seeking a senior manager to join our Sterling Desk Marks, with a preference for candidates from the private sector holding experience in trading, treasury, risk management, market operations, or related fields.

Our responsibilities include market operations, risk management, financial policy, and operational decision-making. The Markets Directorate plays a central role in executing the Bank’s balance sheet management, analysing financial markets, and shaping policy through expertise and market influence.
The Sterling Markets Division (SMD)
The division oversees:
- The Bank’s sterling balance sheet and bond portfolios.
- Monetary policy execution and financial liquidity support.
- Administering the UK’s risk-free rate systems.
- Managing critical market facilities and operations.
This role offers a unique opportunity to influence central banking policy, monitor markets, and contribute to the Bank’s structural evolution—at a crucial time for financial stability.

The Role: Trading Desk Manager
This is a senior front-office position that spans three key areas:
- Execution (implementation of monetary policy and balance sheet adjustments).
- Market monitoring and insight (real-time analysis for policy recommendations).
- Policy shaping (influencing operational frameworks and financial stability strategies).

Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Leadership
- Ensure efficient, accurate, and high-quality execution of critical operations, including:
- Overseeing reserves lending and scheduled operations (e.g., gilt auctions, lending facilities).
- Managing the Sterling Bond Portfolio and ensuring compliance with Bank policies.
- Leading effectiveness reviews of policy interventions.
- Coordinate staff while balancing speed, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
- Adapt quickly under pressure to resolve operational challenges that may arise.
2. Market Monitoring & Analysis
- Track UK rates markets and broader financial systems, spotlighting cross-border trends.
- Provide detailed briefings to senior committees, identifying patterns and risks.
- Develop and refine data-driven tools for evaluating market reactions to policy shifts.
3. Policy & Strategy Shaping
- Work alongside MPC/FPC committees and senior management to refine monetary/financial stability policies.
- Propose innovations to crisis management (e.g., COVID-19 lending schemes, Gilt crisis mitigation).
- Lead cross-divisional projects, from quantitative tightening to stablecoin regulation.
4. People Management
- Direct a small team (2-3 dealers) with mentorship and clear leadership objectives.
- Oversee performance, attendance, and professional development.
- Collaborate with fellow desk managers in London and Leeds offices to foster a supportive, inclusive culture.
- Contribute to building knowledge-sharing networks, particularly for distributed teams.

No prior central banking experience is required, only a dedicated analytical and strategic mindset.

Salary & Benefits (Package)
- Salary range: £65,440–£73,620 (pro-rated for part-time roles).
