About the Role
Are you interested in an exciting and impactful front-office role that offers critical insight into central banking? This high-profile role combines responsibility for the Bank’s critical market operations with direct contributions to monetary and financial stability policy.
We’re seeking a manager to join our Sterling Markets Desk. Current private sector candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those with experience in trading, treasury, risk management, market operations, or related fields.
The Bank of England is the UK’s central bank, committed to delivering monetary and financial stability for the nation. Its Markets Directorate is pivotal in:
- Leading market operations and balance sheet management
- Providing market intelligence and policy guidance
- Working across divisions: Sterling Markets Division (SMD), Foreign Exchange, Market Intelligence & Analysis, Markets Policy Hub, and Financial Risk Management.
This role provides an outstanding opportunity to engage deeply with policy thinking, market intelligence, and operational projects that define central banking.
Key Responsibilities
This senior front-office role merges execution, balance-sheet management, and policy influence, encompassing three core dimensions:
1. Execution
- Oversee critical Bank operations, including:
- Coordination of reserves lending and Bank Rate decisions
- Leading gilt transactions
- Daily management of gilt auctions, sterling lending facilities, and the Sterling Bond Portfolio
- Make sound judgments and adapt under pressure while ensuring accurate, efficient delivery.
- Drive continuous improvement in processes.
2. Market Monitoring & Insight
- Monitor UK rates markets and financial system developments.
- Analyze and present real-time market intelligence to senior committee members.
- Collaborate on market analysis tools and interpretations of economic/policy shifts.
- Foster engagement with market participants for insights and data.

3. Policy Shaping
- Influence monetary policy, financial stability, and balance sheet strategy.
- Serve as a bridge between operational realities and policy development.
- Work across colleagues to assess and improve operations, leading projects such as:
- Quantitative Tightening, repo-led framework, and response mechanisms (e.g., COVID-19 lending schemes).
- Crisis interventions (e.g., Gilt market LDI management in 2022).
- Emerging initiatives like CNRF for non-bank lending.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead a team of 2–3 dealers, providing coaching, feedback, and clear objectives.
- Foster an inclusive, collaborative team environment.
- Represent the team across development reviews, performance management, and broader desk initiatives.
Leeds Office & Culture
- Part of the Bank’s growing Leeds office, offering solid career development and collaborative culture.
- Key role in promoting office inclusion and connectivity with the London hub.
- Highlight perspectives for diverse roles, including standalone engagements.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
Strong candidates come from backgrounds such as:
- Bank treasury, ALM, or liquidity management
- Market operations, rates/repo trading, or risk functions
- Policy institutions or consultancy roles with financial market exposure

- Execution: Skill in high-pressure environments with leadership, adaptability, and decision-making.
- Team Management: Setting direction, workload alignment, and inclusive leadership.
- Judgement: Sound operational execution with attention to detail, high-quality results.
- Market Knowledge: Insights gained from public/financial institutions.
Key Competencies
- Blending analysis, theory, and market expertise to influence senior decisions.
- Strong stakeholder relationships across hierarchical levels.
- Integration of practical and theoretical knowledge to support operations and strategy.

Compensation & Clarifications
- Salary range: £65,440 - £73,620.
- Security checks (6–12 weeks via National Security Vetting process).
