Traffic Control Systems Engineer
Overview
The AtkinsRéalis’ Traffic Control Systems (TCS) team works across the transport sector, assisting clients in navigating a rapidly evolving world. By linking current Traffic Signals and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) with future-facing technology, the team delivers design, implementation, consultancy, and advisory projects to UK and international clients, including the Department for Transport, National Highways, and UK local authorities.
Operating within the Intelligent Transport & Infrastructure (ITI) practice—part of AtkinsRéalis’ UK Transportation business—TCS provides market-leading expertise in traffic signals, Urban Traffic Control (UTC), and operations. Collaborating with Intelligent Mobility & Smart Transport (IMST), the team integrates traffic signals, motorway control systems, toll road systems, smart ticketing, and emerging trends such as digital highways, Mobility-as-a-Service, Connected Vehicles, and AI.
Your Role
As a Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you’ll play a vital part in delivering high-quality, world-class projects across the UK while improving travel safety, sustainability, and urban mobility.
Location: Hybrid working from Bristol, Birmingham, Epsom, or Nottingham. Some projects may require short-term travel, including international assignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Delivery:
- Lead design, implementation, and validation of Traffic Signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation (detailed design, FAT, SAT).
- Work with clients to provide technical advice, solutions, and project oversight, fostering strong business relationships.

Mentorship & Knowledge-Sharing:
- Guide less experienced colleagues in technical delivery and project management.
- Develop commercial acumen, including cost estimates, project scoping, and budget monitoring.

- Deliver high-quality technical reports and presentations for clients.
- Proactively identify and resolve project risks and issues.

About You
We’re seeking a self-motivated, analytical problem-solver with enthusiasm for traffic systems engineering and the following attributes:

- Familiarity with traffic signals, highways design best practices, and ITS operations.

- Strong logical reasoning to develop and implement creative solutions.

- Excellent presentation skills, ability to liaise with clients, and strong interpersonal effectiveness.

- Experience managing multiple projects with varied stakeholders.

Compliance Awareness:
- Familiarity with Health & Safety (CDM regulations).

Aspiration for Professional Growth:
- Willingness to join a professional institution (e.g., ICE, Chartered Engineer routes) or pursue Chartered status, with support from AtkinsRéalis.
