Traffic Management Operative – Exeter
Department: Global Traffic Management (GTM)
Location: Exeter
Compensation: £12.21 – £15.00 per hour (£12.71–£15.00/hr for qualified candidates, with enhanced overtime rates)
About the Role
As an experienced Traffic Management Operative, you will play a critical role in ensuring smooth, efficient, and safe traffic management schemes across a variety of construction and roadwork projects. This position demands flexibility, including day, night, and weekend shifts, as project needs arise. You must embody a "can-do" attitude and a strong commitment to Health & Safety.
Key accountability lies in:
- Maintaining operational efficiency while adhering to strict safety standards.
- Ensuring compliance with legislative traffic management guidelines (Red Book, Chapter 8, ARTSM).
- Leading by example, both in technical execution and professional conduct.
Key Responsibilities
Your role is multifaceted, covering active on-site work and administration. Key duties include:

Traffic Management Operations
- Deploy and manage all forms of traffic control components: including give-and-take devices, portable traffic signals, road/lane closures, diversions, convoy coordination, and Stop/Go boards.
- Conduct risk assessments and standardise operating methods (method statements) for approved procedures.
- Regularly inspect sites to ensure ongoing compliance with safety and legal standards.

Vehicle & Workplace Safety
- Perform daily vehicle safety checks on all assigned equipment.
- Uphold a clean and orderly workspace, reinforcing a professional company image.
- Ensure all personal protective equipment (Five-Point PPE) is worn on site at all times.

Stakeholder Engagement & Drive Safety
- Offer assistance and guide the public safely through active worksites.
- Obtain or report when management intervention is required for operational hurdles.
- Drive vehicles meticulously, adhering to speed limits and road regulations to prevent collisions.
- Park safely with consideration for pedestrians and other road users.

Follow GTM’s "Golden Rules"
- Prioritise qualified compliance for all activities (Lantra-certified).
- Act immediately on unsafe acts or conditions, rectifying as competent, or escalating otherwise.
Experience & Qualifications

Essential
- Lantra accreditation *(minimum 12d TTMBC, covering M1-M2 vehicles).
- Chapter 8/Red Book awareness: Able to evidence familiarity with these standards and their application.
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
Preferred
- Lantra 12a/b or IPV licensing (ideal for driver/foreperson roles).
- Hands-on mechanical knowledge for traffic signal equipment maintenance.
Skills & Attributes
- Strong reading interpretation of CAD drawings for project scope.
- Proficiency in analysing and interpreting legislative traffic guidance.
