Traffic Signal Design Engineer (Urban64®)
Location: Home Based with travel as required
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm
Contract: Permanent, Full Time
Overview
SRL is the UK's leading provider of intelligent temporary traffic management solutions. The Traffic Signal Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, configuration and technical support of SRL's Urban64® traffic signal systems, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient operation across a wide range of temporary traffic management schemes.
The role supports customers, operations teams and project managers by developing signal designs, programming Urban64 equipment and providing technical expertise throughout the lifecycle of temporary traffic signal installations.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities
- Design traffic signal schemes using the SRL Urban64® system.
- Develop signal staging, phasing and timing plans to suit site-specific traffic management requirements.
- Configure and programme Urban64 controllers and associated equipment.
- Produce technical drawings, signal layouts and supporting documentation.
- Assess customer requirements and provide appropriate technical solutions.
- Review site information, traffic management plans and risk assessments to develop compliant signal designs.
- Support Operations and Project Delivery teams during installation, commissioning and fault investigation.
- Assist with the testing and validation of Urban64 configurations prior to deployment.
- Liaise with customers, traffic management contractors and internal departments to ensure successful project delivery.
- Provide technical guidance to field engineers and depot personnel.
- Maintain accurate design records, configuration files and project documentation.
- Support product development and continuous improvement initiatives relating to the Urban64 platform.
- Provide remote technical support for live installations when necessary.
- Contribute to the development of engineering standards, templates and best practice documentation.

Working Hours
- Full-time (37.5 hours per week).
- There is flexibility on work location.
- Occasional travel throughout the UK, with overnight stays where operationally required.

Skills & Experience
Essential
- Experience in traffic signal engineering or temporary traffic management.
- AutoCAD experience.
- Good understanding of traffic signal principles.
- Ability to interpret traffic management drawings and site layouts.
- Experience producing engineering documentation and technical reports.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Good IT skills including Microsoft Office.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- A methodical approach with excellent attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel to customer sites across the UK when required.
Desirable
- Experience using the SRL Urban64® platform.
- Knowledge of temporary traffic management standards.
- Experience working within the traffic industry.
- Experience commissioning or maintaining traffic signals.
- Experience supporting intelligent transport or connected traffic signal technologies.

Technical Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to have knowledge or experience in:
- Permanent traffic signal operation.
- Traffic controller configuration TR2500.
- Modes of operation including VA, FT, CLF, UTC, MOVA & Hurry Calls.
- Pedestrian and shuttle working arrangements.
- Temporary traffic management principles.
- Signal timing optimisation.
- Temporary/Permanent traffic management layouts.

Essential Qualifications
- HNC, HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Health, Safety & Compliance
The post holder will:
- Work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.
- Ensure all designs comply with current UK legislation and industry guidance relating to temporary traffic management.
- Support SRL's commitment to quality, safety and environmental management.
- Promote safe working practices across all engineering and operational activities.
- Participate in site visits, inspections and technical reviews where required.

Performance will typically be measured against:
- Accuracy and quality of Urban64 signal designs.
- Delivery of engineering work to agreed timescales.
- Compliance with SRL engineering standards.
- Customer satisfaction.
- Reduction in installation issues and technical defects.
- Support provided to operational teams.

- Technical documentation quality.
