About the Role
People turn to Northern for trains they can rely on. Behind every punctual service and seamless customer journey lies meticulous planning, coordination, and expertise. As our Traincrew Programme Manager, you’ll lead one of our most critical operational initiatives, shaping how we plan, deploy, and optimise train crew across the entire network for years to come.
This role sits within our Operational Readiness team and will transform our approach to workforce planning, training, rostering, and utilisation into a single, integrated programme—delivering tangible, measurable results.

If you thrive on solving complex challenges, driving alignment among teams, and leading transformative change at scale, this is your opportunity.

- Benefits Realisation: Define performance metrics and capture programme benefits, ensuring improvements reflect in day-to-day operations.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Lead and influence stakeholders across all areas of Northern, fostering collaboration and alignment.
- Risk & Mitigation: Identify and manage programme risks, developing mitigation strategies to stay on schedule.
- Long-Term Standards: Establish consistent delivery standards, governance frameworks, and ways of working that endure beyond the programme’s lifecycle.
- Team Leadership: Guide a high-performing team, prioritising outcomes, accountability, and continuous improvement.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
